This is our go-to recipe for Classic Coffee Cake and it features a fluffy vanilla cake with cinnamon sugar swirls topped with a delicious and super buttery Brown Sugar and Cinnamon topping. Yum!

Coffee Cake is so yummy.  We don’t think enough people make this fun breakfast treat anymore so we are leading the charge to bring it back into popularity. This is our go-to recipe and it features a fluffy vanilla cake with cinnamon sugar swirls topped with a delicious and super buttery Brown Sugar and Cinnamon topping.  Serve it with coffee or without coffee, it is a delicious treat that is sure to please.

How to make the Cake Batter

Step 1:  In a bowl, add the Flour, Sugar,  Baking Powder, and Salt and mix until combined. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients.  Stir with a spoon (do not use a mixer) until the batter is just combined.

Step 2: Spread batter into a greased 9-inch square baking pan. 
Step 3: In a small bowl, mix the white sugar and cinnamon. 
Step 4: Spoon the cinnamon sugar onto the cake.
Step 5: Use a knife to swirl into the batter.

Step 6: In a medium bowl, combine cubed butter, brown sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon.
Step 7: Use a fork, pastry blender, or your fingers to mix until combined.
Step 8 & 9: Sprinkle the brown sugar/butter topping over the top of the cake.

Step 10: Bake the Coffee Cake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 30-33 minutes.
Step 11: Serve warm.

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup Buttermilk

Topping

  • 1/4 cup Butter (cold, cubbed)
  • 1/4 cup Brown Sugar (packed)
  • 1/3 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, add the Flour, Sugar,  Baking Powder and Salt and mix until combined.
  2. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, melted butter and vanilla.

  10. Serve warm.
