Homemade Applesauce is delicious. When my sister and I were little and got sick, our grandmother would come to take care of us and she always made us applesauce. It was such a special treat. It is one of my most cherished childhood memories. When I was older, Grandma taught me how to make it, and even though hers tasted better, I think this recipe comes pretty darn close to the applesauce of my memories.  And applesauce is not just great when you aren’t feeling well, it’s a yummy side dish for a big hearty meal, a great afternoon snack, and super tasty heated up and poured over ice cream.  If you’ve never made homemade apple sauce, now is the time to give it a try.

How to make Apple Sauce

Step 1: Peel and core the apples.
Step 2: Cut them into similar size pieces and place them in a medium-sized pan.  Squeeze lemon on the apples to keep them from turning brown.

Step 3: Add water to the pan.
Step 4:
Cover the pot and simmer on medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until apples are tender (about 6 -10 minutes), and then add the sugar.
Step 5:
Continue cooking for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 6: We like our apple sauce chunky but if you wanted it smooth you could use an immersion blender to break down the apple sauce after you remove it from the stove.

Cinnamon in Applesauce?

Steps 7-8: There is a bit of disagreement here at Two Sisters (Laurie yes, Nancy no) about whether or not apple sauce should have cinnamon but if you’d like a bit more fall flavor in your applesauce, you can add a teaspoon of Cinnamon.

How to Serve/Store

Step 9: Store the applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should be good for 2-3 weeks (if it lasts that long!).  You can also freeze the applesauce.  We put it in a plastic bag to freeze, it should last 2-3 months in the freezer.
