We have Step by Step directions on how to make a DIY peacock costume for Halloween for a toddler or a child with a tulle tutu skirt and a peacock feather bustle.

During the summer Allison’s grandparents took her to an arboretum that had a lot of peacocks living there.  She was entranced. Since then Peacocks have been her second favorite animal (puppies are firmly established in the #1 spot.)  As we started thinking about a Halloween costume, I remembered seeing a Peacock Tutu costume on Pinterest that was really cute but I was worried that the feather bustle would be too difficult to replicate.  We identified a store-bought mermaid costume as a potential back-up and decided to go for it.  We were proud as peacocks of this DIY Peacock Costume.

Peacock Costume Tutu Skirt

Collage image showing the steps for making a DIY tutu skirt for the DIY Peacock Costume.

This is the peacock tutu skirt that we made.  Actually, this is the second peacock tutu skirt that we made.  The tulle colors that we used on the first one were too light (light green, sparkly green, aqua, etc.)  It was a beautiful wood nymph tutu but didn’t really look like a peacock.  So we found some darker, bolder colored tulle (purple, bright blue, sage, forest green.) Much better!

I measured a piece of elastic so it would fit comfortably around Allison’s waist and then I sewed the ends together with the sewing machine.  I used Allison’s chair for her little table as a work surface by slipping the elastic over the back of the chair.  I wanted the skirt to be 16″-17″ long so I cut my pieces of tulle in 36″ pieces using a yard stick as a measuring device.  Each loop I put on was actually two pieces of tulle.  I knotted the pieces of tulle onto the elastic as shown above.  By attaching the tulle with the loop down and bringing the edges of the tulle down through the loop you will have the knot in the front instead of the inside of the elastic.

I continued knotting the tulle pieces all the way around the elastic.  I alternated green colors with the blue and purples so that the skirt would seem mostly green with just a hint of the brighter colors.

 Peacock Costume Top

For the top, we bought a bright blue long-sleeved leotard and hot glued on three sparkly decorative peacock feathers that we found in the floral section of Michaels

For her hair, we found this Peacock themed Christmas Tree decoration at Hobby Lobby.  I glued a ponytail hair band to the back of the decoration and we attached this to her ponytail.  This was SUPER CUTE!  Thanks Hobby Lobby – you never let us down!!!

Peacock Bustle

I’ve left the best (and the hardest) part of the costume for last.  The base of this piece is the plastic bridal fan that you see in the picture at the top of the post.  I used the hot glue gun to glue the bottoms of the tines of the fan together so it would stay open.  Then I glued the purple feather boa to the top side of the fan.  I didn’t obsess over the placement of the boa, I just wanted all of the white of the fan to be covered by the purple feathers. Finally, I used the hot glue gun to glue the peacock feathers to the fan in rows as you can see in the picture above.  In total, I used about 35 feathers.  To give it some dimension, I tried to make sure that feathers with the bigger heads were on the bottom and the smaller ones at top.

I attached a silky green ribbon to the top of the fan as a way to attach the bustle to the costume.  We wrapped the length of the ribbon around her waist twice and tied the bow in the bac

I covered the back of the Peacock bustle with blue fabric. I did this because when she was wearing the costume, you could see a little bit of the corners of the white fan when looking at the costume from the front.
