We are currently obsessed with cookie cups, it’s a fun take on one of our favorite things … Sugar Cookies with Buttercream Frosting.  We knew we wanted to make a fun version for Christmas and came up with the idea for a Santa Hat Cookie Cup.  They turned out exactly how we envisioned.  They were pretty easy to do, and I know will be super popular at our cookie exchange this year.

Step 1: Our Santa Hat Cookie Cups start with our delicious Sugar Cookie Recipe.  The cookies taste amazing and the dough always keeps its shape.  You can find the recipe here.

Step 2: We added Red Food Coloring to the finished Sugar Cookie dough and then rolled out the cookie dough as we would for traditional sugar cookies, however, you want the rolled-out dough to be on the thinner side.  Use a round cookie cutter to cut out some circles.
Step 3: Lay the cookie dough circles onto the top of an opening in a mini muffin tin.  Press the center of the cookie dough down and mold it around the inside of the cup of the muffin tin. Bake the cookie cups in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 5-6 minutes.  You don’t want the edges or the outside of the cookie cup to get too dark so watch the cookies carefully around the 4 minute mark and take them out before they start browning.  Let the cookie cups cool completely.

How to Make the Frosting

Step 4: Next you need to make up a batch of our Best Buttercream Frosting.   Put aside 1/4 of the frosting.  You’ll use this white batch for the “fur” on the Santa Hat.  Tint the rest red with Red Food Coloring.

Steps 5-6: Using a pastry bag and a Wilton 1M frosting tip, fill the cookie cup with a swirl of red buttercream frosting – this is the “hat”.
Step 7: Using the white frosting you set aside and the same Wilton 1M decorating tip.  Create a circle of frosting flowers around the red frosting hat.
Step 8: And finally, add a dab of white frosting for the top of the Santa Hat.
