How to make Colored Whipped Cream

We have all the directions you’ll need to make pretty and delicious homemade Colored Whipped Cream. It could not be easier to make and this colored whipping cream will look so special and pretty on your desserts.
When Nancy and I were kids, Cool Whip was our Mom’s whipped topping of choice. We rarely if ever had Whipped Cream and we don’t know why because it is so very delicious. Now a days we will almost always serve whipped cream as a dessert topping. And even though the whipped cream in the can tastes great – Whipped Cream from scratch is better. And it is so very easy to make! And sometimes on special occasions when our dessert calls for a little extra pizzazz — we make Colored Whipped Cream.

Pour 1 cup of Heavy Whipping Cream into a measuring cup. This is the point where you add the food coloring. For our pretty pink whipped cream we added the tiniest drop of pink food coloring. You don’t need very much! Mix the food coloring into the whipping cream with a spoon until it is completely incorporated.

Now pour the colored whipping cream into a “CHILLED” metal mixing bowl. We placed both our mixing bowl and the whisk attachment in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes before we made the whipped cream. Now add Powdered Sugar to taste. We used 3 tablespoons of Powdered Sugar. You might like your Whipped Cream to be more of less sweet. After much trial and error – we think 3 tablespoons is the “just right” amount.

Using the whisk attachment, beat on medium speed until stiff peaks form. Do not over-beat the whipped cream, it will turn into butter if you whisk it too long.

That’s all there is to making pretty, creamy and delicious Colored Whipped Cream from scratch.

I am making a cake with dairy free whipped cream. I plan on using coconut milk to make it, but I was wondering if I could still dye the cream? I have never used coconut cream before.
That should work.
Do you use liquid or gel food colouring?
We use the Wilton Color Right food coloring.
Hi, when I add vanilla pudding to my whipped cream for stabilization. I sometimes add color too for cake decorations but have noticed that it starts changing color (has a dried up look) after I take the cake out of the fridge. What can I do to avoid this?
Hi Kay – What we do is add the food coloring to the whipping cream at the beginning of the process (before you start whipping it.) Seems to solve the problem you are talking about. Hope that helps!
I just read to add 1 heaping tablespoon of marshmallow fluff to each cup of heavy cream prior to whipping to obtain that special whipped cream for cakes! The author of the “secret” also said to make sure to refrigerate the whipping bowl and whip in the freezer for 30mins to 1 hour.
Can i use liquid based food color?
Yes, that will work.
for food coloring did you use a drop of red or a wilton pink? I’m loving these recipes!
Hi Ashley – we’ve done both but usually we use a tiny drop of the Wilton Pink. It makes a nice soft shade of Pink.
Do you use liquid or gel food coloring?
We use Wilton Color Right Food Coloring which is a liquid.
How long does this last before using? I am looking to make pink or blue whip cream for my gender reveal; and want to pipe it from a pastry bag. How far in advance could it be made and put in the bag before we use it?
Unfortunately, whipped cream doesn’t last that long. My best guess would be an hour or two in the refrigerator. You might want to try our Whipped Cream Frosting. It uses pudding to stabilize it, so it will last over night if you need it to, Here is a link . https://www.twosisterscrafting.com/best-whipped-cream-frosting/
Can I put the mixer bowl and whisk in the Fridge instead of the freezer ?
Hi Tina, the freezer is ideal, but the refrigerator would work too.

Hi, I am not sure how well the colored whipped cream will hold up on cupcakes. I think you would need to frost them and serve them pretty quick. If you want you can try our, whipped cream frosting. https://www.twosisterscrafting.com/best-whipped-cream-frosting/ You can make this the day before and keep overnight easily.
Can you color the best whipped cream frosting as well?
Hi Cynthia, you can color the whipped cream frosting. I suggest adding the color in the beginning like we did here, so you don’t over whip it.
