Whenever Nancy and I see special holiday M&M’s, we end up buying 15 bags. We just love having different colors to decorate with. We were super happy when we saw that M&M’s had put out Patriotic colors which include the rare “white M&M”. We knew we had to use them to make something fun for the 4th of July. This American Flag Cake was all that we hoped it would be … patriotic, beautiful and so very tasty!

Ingredients You Will Need

All the ingredients you will need to make an American Flag cake including Red White and Blue M&M's, Buttercream Frosting and a 9x13" cake.

4th of July M&M’s:  The key to this decorating project are these Red White and Blue M&M’s.   The red and blue are the same colors you can get in a regular bag of M&M’s but this special holiday bag contains white M&M’s which are so nice to have.  We used these for our M&M Flag Cake but also bought a bunch of extra bags so we will have some White M&M’s on hand for future baking projects.  (Two Sisters Tip:  If stored in a cool, dry place in an unopened bag, M&M’s last over a year.) We found these 4th of July themed M&M’s in the candy aisle at Target but if you can’t find them there, party stores like Party City sell M&M’s in all colors including white.

Chocolate Cake or Brownies: We used a 9×13″ pan of Brownies but this would be just as great on a white, yellow, or chocolate sheet cake.  You can find our Brownie Recipe right here.

Buttercream Frosting:  Next, we whipped up a batch of our Best Buttercream Frosting Recipe and frosted the Brownies.  Creamy and delicious and super easy to make … it is the secret ingredient to this easy 4th of July dessert. You can find our recipe for buttercream frosting here.

How to Create the American Flag Design

Steps 1-3: Now the fun part, using the M&M’s to create the flag.  I ultimately used about a bag and a half of M&M’s on the cake but I used nearly all of the white M&M’s from two bags so if you are using a normal 9 x 13″  cake pan you will need to buy 2 bags of the Red White and Blue M&M’s.  The first thing I did was place a row of blue M&M’s around the outer edge of the cake.  Then I started applying the blue M&M’s for the “star” area of the flag. For the Red and White stripes, I used two rows each of red and white M&M’s.

Step 4: This could not have been easier to do.  The whole decorating process took about 20 minutes. And the Brownies tasted so delicious with the Buttercream frosting and the M&M’s. If you need an amazing patriotic dessert to take to a 4th of July party or a Memorial Day BBQ this is the one!  It could not be easier to create, it would even be a fun baking project to do with the kids.
