Cookie Monster Popcorn
Yummy and adorable Cookie Monster Popcorn – sweet and salty popcorn mixed with mini cookies and googly monster eyes. Fun and delicious, a great combination!
The most popular recipe on Two Sisters Crafting is our Grinch Popcorn. So we thought … Hey, what other iconic furry character deserves their own popcorn recipe? It didn’t take long to come up with an idea … our favorite cookie-loving monster. We love how this Cookie Monster Popcorn turned out and boy did the family love it. This sweet and salty popcorn with a smattering of mini cookies is very yummy, easy to make, and super duper adorable!
Preparing the Popcorn
Step 1: You will need 10 cups of popcorn. We pop our popcorn on the stove (you can find our directions on How to Make Perfect Popcorn here) but you can use air-popped or microwave.
Step 2: After the popcorn is popped, make sure to remove all of the un-popped kernels. You don’t want to bite down on one of those!
Step 3: Once you have made the popcorn, salt it liberally. It is so nice to taste the salty popcorn with the sweet marshmallow coating. Not quite like Kettle Corn but close.
Preparing the Marshmallow Mixture
Step 4: To make the Marshmallow Mixture, add 3 tablespoons of butter to a medium saucepan. Melt the butter on medium heat, stirring occasionally until the butter is completely melted.
Step 5: Add 3 cups of mini marshmallows to the saucepan.
Step 6: Stir until the marshmallows are covered in butter, and then continue to stir until the marshmallows are completely melted.
Step 7: Take the marshmallow mixture off the heat as soon as the last marshmallow has melted.
Making the Marshmallow Popcorn
Step 8: To tint the marshmallow mixture, we added 3 drops of blue food coloring from the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring system.
Step 9: Slowly pour about a third of the marshmallow mixture over the salted popcorn.
Step 10: Gently fold the marshmallow mixture in with the popcorn. Continue to add the marshmallow mixture a bit at a time, stirring between each addition.
Step 11: The popcorn should be completely covered in the warm marshmallow mixture.
Step 12: Now pour the popcorn onto a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper, foil, or a Silpat liner and use the spatula to even the popcorn out on the cookie sheet.
Step 13: Here are the mix-ins that we added to our Cookie Monster Popcorn. We used a handful of Mini Chips Ahoy, a handful of Mini Oreos, and a handful of Wilton Candy Eyes. Now it is time to add the cookies and the candy eyes. Don’t wait too long after you pour the popcorn onto the cookie sheet. You want the marshmallow mixture to still be warm and sticky. Sprinkle the cookies onto the popcorn, concentrating on the areas with the most drizzled marshmallow mixture. We strategically placed the Wilton Candy Eyes together throughout the popcorn. Allow the Cookie Monster Popcorn to cool. Break apart into pieces and serve.
Expert Tips and Faqs
We make our popcorn from scratch on the stove – nothing is better than that in our opinion. You can find all the tips and tricks you need to make the perfect popcorn right here. You can also use Microwave popcorn but you should use a type that has no butter flavoring added.
The contrast of sweet and salty in this popcorn recipe is super yummy. To get that combination you should lean towards over-salting the popcorn. We try to salt the popcorn as soon as it comes out of the pan so that salt sticks to the hot popcorn.
Our family loves this popcorn so it has never lasted longer than a day at our house. This popcorn definitely tastes the best right after it is made but will keep for a few days in an airtight container. The popcorn is a little chewier the next day because the popcorn absorbs some of the moisture from the marshmallow mixture but it still tastes good.

Can I use store bought popcorn like Skinny Pop or is it recommended to use air pop/microwave popcorn?
Hi Candace – We haven’t tried that but I don’t know why it wouldn’t work.
Have you tried tinting white dipping chocolate instead of using melted marshmallows?
Hi Diane – we like the taste of the marshmallow mixture but I’ve seen recipes that use the candy melts/white chocolate. As long as you have oil based candy food coloring that should work though. Good luck!
Hi I was wondering if this could be made the day before eating it?
Hi Jessica – Yes it can. But it is a little chewier the next day. Our family still likes it the next day (and the day after that!) but it does taste the best freshly made.
Sorry for the typos, I was typing fast from my phone, how did you get the color to coat the popcorn so evenly? And is the popcorn suppose to be sticky even after it is cooled? Mine came out really sticky even after it was cooled. I couldn’t get the color to coat all the popcorn it kept sticky in clumps and I ran out of the melted marshmallow mixture and it still was barely coated. What am I doing wrong? I am trying to master this so I can make it for a baby shower in a couple of weeks??? HELP??
Hi Christy – The popcorn is a little bit sticky and the more marshmallow mixture you use the stickier it will be. Here are some tips … 1) use a good food coloring to make sure that the mixture is bright blue. 2) Make sure you are only using 10 cups of popped popcorn. 3) Use a big bowl like the one we are using in the pictures. You really need to churn the popcorn around to get it 100& covered. 3) Don’t slowly drizzle the marshmallow mixture on the popcorn, you need a good amount of it to work with as you are stirring. I usually pour about half the mixture onto the top of the popcorn. Then I give the popcorn a good stir – I usually use a rubber spatula to do the stirring. Then I had half of the remaining mixture and stir it again. You really need to work the popcorn around in the big bowl with the spatula. Hope that helps.
Question, mine came out really sticky even after it cooled for awhile, what did I do wrong? Also, I did you get your color to distribute so evenly? It seemed like I was running out of the mixtures before it even covered all the popcorn and I was stirring as I was pouring the melted marshmallows over it, HELP!!! I’m trying to make this for a baby shower in a couple of weeks…
Hi Tina, well I guess the important part is that it tasted good.
Hi! Love this will be making it for my daughters day care party does is matter what type of popcorn we are popping? like butter, unsalted, kettlecorn? which popcorn do you use for this recipe?
Hi! We make our own in a pan and add salt. But microwave popcorn will work too. I definitely would pick a salted version with no butter. Hope that helps!
About how many cups and/or servings is the standard recipe please?
Hi Trina – Our recipe calls for 10 cups of popcorn, the number of servings really depends on how much your guests LOVE it!
this is Genius!!!!
and looks like a great way to say hello to my daughters new 1st grade class!!!!
Thank you!!! I think you are right it would be a great treat for your daughter’s first grade class.
I’m sorry – I’ve scrolled up and down several times, but I can’t locate a print friendly version of this recipe. Can someone tell me where it is? Thank you!
What is the shredded white stuff in the 3rd bowl?
Hi Linda – those are white sprinkles. We ended up not using them!
