This unusual but absolutely delicious Dorito Taco Salad recipe features a yummy homemade avocado dressing and is always a hit at family dinner.

This is the third installment of our Mom’s Bridge Club Recipes (see also Enchilada Casserole and Chicken Tortilla Casserole.)  You’ll know this Dorito Taco Salad with Avocado Dressing is a recipe from the Seventies because it is a green salad that features both Doritos and Mayonnaise.  It sounds weird, I know, but don’t jump to any conclusions. This salad is delicious and one of our family’s all-time favorites.  Anytime either of us has taken it to a potluck or a barbecue, it has been the hit of the party.

Ingredients you will need

All the ingredients you will need to make Dorito Taco Salad including Green Leaf lettuce, Nacho Cheese Doritos, Avocados, Green Onions, Cheese, Chopped Olives and Mayonnaise.
  • Lettuce: We usually use Red Leaf Lettuce but this salad is also good with Romaine lettuce and Green Leaf Lettuce.
  • Doritos: Chips in salad? You’re welcome. We use Nacho Cheese Doritos.
  • Grated Cheese: We like to use Cheddar Jack but a nice medium Cheddar or a Mexican Cheese Blend would also be good.
  • Chopped Olives: we think the pre-chopped are easier but you can chop your own.
  • Green Onions: We use 2-3 stalks.
  • Avocados: You will need two good sized ripe avocados for the dressing, so if you only have smaller avocados, you’ll probably need three.
  • Mayonnaise: to add a little creaminess to the dressing.
  • Garlic Salt: for the avocado dressing.

Preparing the Ingredients

Step 1: Wash the lettuce and dry. Rip the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place in the salad bowl. Add cheese, onions and olives to the lettuce and toss together.

How to make the Avocado Dressing

Step 2: To make the Avocado Dressing, take the skin off the avocados and mash as you would for guacamole.
Step 3: We add a little bit of garlic salt to the smashed avocado at this point.
Step 4: Then add 1/2 cup of mayonnaise to the mixture and mix.
Step 5: Scoop the dressing into the salad.

How to Assemble the Salad

Step 6: Fold the dressing into the salad until all the lettuce is covered. Fill a small bag with Doritos and then smash them up into smaller pieces.  Fold the Doritos into the salad right before you are going to serve the salad so they stay crunchy.

Serving Instructions

This recipe is super easy and super delicious.  Because of the Avocado Dressing this salad isn’t going to save for the next day so make sure you eat it all the first night.  (That really has never been a problem in our family!)
