Sheep Baby Blanket
Our Sheep Baby Blanket is an adorable knitted baby blanket project that would be cute in any color.
Nancy saw this Sheep Baby Blanket on Pinterest and insisted that I make it. It is officially the cutest baby blanket I have ever knitted. Spoiler Alert: if you know me and are having a baby this is the blanket that I am going to knit for you!
You will need:
- Precious Knit Blankies for Baby pattern book
- Yarn Bobbins
- Size 8 (5mm) Circular Knitting Needle
- Black Embroidery Thread
- Vanna’s Choice Yarn – Pink
- Bernat Pipsqueak Fuzzy Yarn – White
This is the book (Precious Knit Blankies for Baby by Jean Adel) with the Sheep Baby Blanket Pattern along with the picture that we saw on Pinterest. You can get the book at Amazon.
I bought this pink and white yarn at Michaels. You will also need six yarn holders for knitting the white sheep and a Size 8 (5mm circular needle.)
The blanket is a basic Knit and Purl pattern but the little sheep are made using Intarsia knitting which I had never done before so the project did turn out to be a tad challenging.
Here is a look at the back of the blanket while I was working on the rows with the sheep. Each sheep has it’s own piece of yarn, held on one of these yarn holders.4
Here is the blanket before I added turned the white puffs into sheep! It turned out a little smaller than I most baby blankets I make. It’s definitely more of a bouncy chair/car seat cover-up blanket than something that a baby can lay on.
The sheep are finished by embroidering on legs and a head with black yarn.
This is a fun knitting project. I really love how this turned out!
Wow, looks great!! I’ve just finished the knitting part of the blanket but can someone tell me how to start and finish the embroidered faces and legs? Thanks Linda
I also made them for my 2 grandsons and my granddaughter! Twice in ocher yellow and once in dark green. Many nice comments received from passers-by. So that is a compliment for the designer.
Please tell me where I can by this pattern
Regards
Lynn
The pattern is in this book, which you can buy at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Precious-Knit-Blankies-Baby-Leisure/dp/1609001265/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1508269113&sr=8-1&keywords=precious+knit&linkCode=sl1&tag=twosisterscrafting-20&linkId=81a010b830e173295e20b583818d6bcf
Cute designs of blankets for our baby. Thank you for sharing!
I love this pattern, purchased the book and having a good beginner crack at this. Have gotten to the sheep part but I’m really stumped can anyone help me understand the pattern instructions for the sheep?? I don’t want to take a guess as I’d hate to stuff it up from here. Many thanks in advance!! Happy to discuss privately so I don’t post the instructions on the net.
I know this post is a few years old now, but I just saw it on Pinterest. I’m making this in grey now! It is super adorable in the colors you chose. I love how the bright pink really makes those cute little monochrome fuzzy sheep pop!
For everyone asking about the difficulty, it’s my very first knit project, and I’m around halfway finished. I saw this blanket and only knew how to crochet/quilt, so I picked up a knitting book from the library specifically so I could make this. That’s how cute this pattern is! Anyway, if can do it, I’m sure everyone else on here could do it even better!
Is there a crochet pattern similar to this pattern anywhere for sell? I can’t knit one bit.
Hi Wendy – I’m not sure. I can’t crochet one bit. 🙂
Hi Wendy. If you’d like I can teach you to knit. I’ve taught many and it’s so easy.
I am trying to find this pattern as a free one but to no avail. Please ould you direct me to the free link please? Kind regards.
Hi Valerie – I’ve never seen this pattern as a free link. Sorry!
Can I see a pic of the back of the finished blanket? Does it look messy on the back? How did you estimate the length of yarn to put on the yarn bobbins.
Thanks! Blanket is adorable
Hi Melissa – I made the blanket as a gift so I can’t take a picture of the back … sorry. I threaded the ends of the sheep yarn back into the back of the sheep. It is a little bumpy on the back. If you look through the comments I believe another knitter added a fabric backing to cover the back of the blanket which I think is a really great idea and if I ever make another one of these baby blankets I’m definitely going to do that too.
I added two extra rows of sheep and sewed a back (with batting) to it. I’m super happy and would love to send you all a picture. Mine is in Orange (the mommy is obsessed with that color) and I didn’t use the super fuzzy yarn.
That sounds adorable! We’d love to see a picture. And what a great idea to add a backing.
What stitch is the boarder? I may be too new at this but just could not resist this and purchased the book.
It looks like moss stitch
It’s called ‘star stitch’ purl 3 together then purl 3 into one stitch – I’ve made a scarf in this stitch before 🙂
would you consider this hard? It doesn’t look that hard, just wondered. I am average.
Hi Glory – I’m an average knitter too. The bulk of the blanket is very easy – a basic stockinette stitch. The only tricky part is figuring out the best way to switch back back and forth between the main color and the white for the sheep.
I bought everything to start this, one question, the loops that make up the sheep aren’t cut or anything, correct? They just look loopy because you are using bulkier yard with the same size needles as you are knitting the rest of the blanket?
Hi – yes, exactly. It looks loopy because it is thicker yarn that had a little bit of fuzz to it. Good luck!!!
Do you have a picture of what the back looks like finished? I’m currently stitching in the faces and legs and the back just seems so messy! Wondering if I’m doing something wrong or that’s just how it looks.
Hi Heather – I don’t have a picture but it was a little bit messy. You can sort of see that in one of the picture on the post. I weaved in the ends of the white yarn into back area of the sheep so it wouldn’t be quite so messy. You can see that in the picture too.
This blanket is the best! I fall in love with these puffy sheeps…i will try to knit this one and if i can achieve to finish i will share on my blog too
will be haopy if you visit my blog and instagram.thank youu

We can’t wait to see your version! We’re following you on Instagram!
I bought the book and am making the blanket now. For the intarsia knitting, it said to just have the colored yarn go across the back of the sheep and continue with the same string when you were done knitting with the white yarn. This worked for me but my sheep were a bit bunched depending on how much tightness I wanted. What did you do for your sheep? Did you use the same colored yarn across the row or did you have to cut the yarn in-between each sheep so the sheep would not bunch up?
Hi – I carried the pink yarn across the back while I was knitting with the white for the sheep. I used a weave-tin technique that I found on YouTube. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr37s_WhRkY Hope that helps!
This is the cutest thing I have ever seen! How difficult would you say it was to figure out? I am a pretty average knitter and would love to knit this, but I’m wondering if it will be worth it to buy the book and try it or if it will be too hard…
I bought the book from Amazon.com yesterday. I won’t get it until Monday, the 8th. Would you be willing to share how many yards of the main color I need? I am going to my favorite yarn shop tomorrow, and it’s a 45-minute drive. Not worried about the white as I know a skein is enough.
Your blankie is AWESOME!!!
Thanks! You need 190 yards of medium weight yarn. In the pictures you can see the pink yarn, I used about 2 3/4 skeins of that pink yarn. Good luck. It really is an adorable blanket pattern.
Hi, I am so glad I came across this blog (now bookmarked). I would love to try making this blanket. Reading the comments, I can see that you used http://www.yarnsupply.com/161103-3005.html for the sheep. What is the colour number/name of the pink wool you used? Many thanks.
Hi Nicky, we are so glad you like our site. We used Vanna’s Choice Baby by Lion Brand in Pink Poodle for the blanket.
Hi Laurie-
love your blanket! As I am currently putting together a blogpost full of sheep-related diy projects, would it be ok for you if I featured your blanket? Means I would use one of your photos to go with the link to this page.
If this is not ok, please send me a quick message on bastelschaf@gmx.de
Best
Conny
Hi! We’d love to be included in your blogpost. Thanks!
Do you have a store on Etsy??
Would you please sell the yellow sheep blanket. I’m having a grandson in November and giving a baby shower in October would love to give this to her. Please consider. Thank you jeri
Hi twosisterscrafting I’ve just purchased the book with the sheep blanket but unsure the ply is it 10ply wool? Also what sort of white wool ? The patterns not very clear on how to do the sheep so may have to seek an experienced knitter for help.
Hi Tracy – I think 10 ply is Worsted weight yarn. And I used Bernat Baby Blanket yarn for the sheep. Here is a link: http://www.yarnsupply.com/161103-3005.html
OMG, officially the cutest knit I’ve seen all day!!
Thanks, Melissa!!!
Hi there, Beautiful work on the blanket!
I have just ordered the book via post, but happen to be going near a wool shop today. If you’d have a moment to answer, how much of what type of wool will I need to purchase?
Thanks so much!
I would love to buy as well, if you would consider making them!!
I would love to purchase one of these blankets. After 2.5 long years of trying to conceive we are finally having a baby girl in June. I have asked all of my friends who knit if they are able to make this and unfortunately it is beyond their skill. Please consider selling these
Hi, I am currently knitting this blanket and have never knitted intarsia before. I am having a terrible time! I am currently on row 16 of the pattern (which i guess in the long run is still room to fix my error) and the back of my sheep look nothing like yours 🙁 In the pattern it says to carry the gold aka pink across the back of the sheep. So I have long strands of pink yarn across the back of my sheep. So the back of mine looks very messy. Your wrong side looks like the pink strands are worked into the sheep. I’ve watched a few intarsia tutorials and I am led to believe I have done more of a fair isle knit instead. The intarsia tutorials also mention that i need a bobbin for each color change. So on top of the bobbins of white, I would need white bobbins as well? Do you have a intarsia knitting tutorial or any ideas on how to help on how i should proceed with this blanket? I don’t have anyone to ask and I am so frustrated.
Megan, I just saw your comment about this from 2014 (almost 5 years ago) and I find I am in the exact same place with attempting this blanket as you were then. Don’t know if you’re still around and were ever able to finish it but I would love some tips too. The instructions in the book are lacking and I’ve never tried intarsia knitting before. Definitely not as easy as it looks. Do I need bobbins for each white and main color change, or just the white color changes?
would you be interested in selling the sheep blanket?
That’s very flattering Morgan! But no, we haven’t thought of selling them.
I would love to have this pattern
Would you be interested in selling one of these blankets? I would definitely buy one!
