Rice Krispie Easter Eggs
We take our delicious Best Ever Rice Krispie Treats recipe and make colorful Rice Krispie Easter Eggs treats that both kids and adults will love.
We would be hard-pressed to pick our ultimate all-time favorite homemade dessert – it’s either Chocolate Chip Cookies or Rice Krispie Treats. Rice Krispie Treats are so yummy and marshmallow-y that they are usually gobbled up within a day at our houses. And you can do so much more with them than just make them into the standard rectangle-shaped bars. This year for Easter, we made these pretty colored Rice Krispie Easter Eggs are boy are they fun and Easter-y and delicious!
How to make the Rice Krispie Treat Marshmallow Mixture
Step 1-3: The base for our Rice Krispie Easter Eggs is our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe which we have adjusted and perfected over the years until it is now absolutely the best Rice Krispie Treat recipe we have ever tasted. You can find all the directions you’ll need to make these delicious treats right here. We made Easter Eggs in Green, Purple, Blue, Yellow, and Pink so you will need to make five separate batches of Rice Krispie Treat mixture. Each color of Easter Eggs is made from a 3 Cup batch of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Mini Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal).
How to Make the Rice Krispie Easter Eggs
Step 4: Add the food coloring BEFORE you add the Rice Krispie Cereal. To create this pretty shade of Yellow we used 3 drops of Pink Wilton Color Right Food Coloring.
Step 5: Add the Rice Krispie Cereal and stir until the cereal is covered with the marshmallow mixture. Allow the yellow Rice Krispie Treat mixture to cool enough so you can handle it but that it is still malleable.
Step 6: To get Rice Krispie Easter Eggs that were the same sized I measured .5 oz. of the mixture on my food scale.
Step 7-8: Use your hands to mold the Rice Krispie mixture into an easter egg shape. If the mixture is too sticky, rub your fingers with some butter.
Pink Easter Eggs
Add the food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture BEFORE you add the Rice Krispie Cereal. To get this color of Pink we used 4 drops of Pink Wilton Color Right Food Coloring. To find other fun colors, check out our Rice Krispie Treat Color Guide.
Purple Easter Eggs
Follow the same process for each color of Rice Krispie Treat. We were able to make 6 Eggs from a 3 cup batch of Rice Krispie Treat mixture. To get this pretty color of purple we combined 3 drops of Pink and 2 drops of Blue Wilton Color Right Food Coloring.
Green Easter Eggs
To get this bright and Spring-y Green color we used 4 drops of Yellow with 1 drop of Blue Wilton Color Right Food Coloring.
Blue Easter Eggs
It is hard to get Rice Krispie Treats to be a pure pastel blue. The yellow of the cereal is hard to counteract with Food Coloring. Luckily, this light teal is also a pretty Spring color and looks pretty with the other Rice Krispie Easter Eggs. We added 4 drops of Blue Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to the marshmallow mixture. In the picture above, you can see how the mixture color is very different after we added the cereal.
Step 9: Allow the Rice Krispie Easter Eggs to cool before you store them. Store them in an airtight container and they will last for 3-4 days before they start to get too stale. You can freeze them for up to 3 months.

As something fun to do you can also fill the eggs with jellybeans or M&Ms! I’ve done this a few years as well!
How long before the time can I make them?
Rice Krispie Treats freeze up great.
when you make them in the plastic eggs… do they come out of them easy?.. or do you spray the eggs with cooking spray or melted butter before putting rice krispie treats in them?….. how do you do them if forming them in the plastic eggs?
I found it much easier to just form an egg shape with my hands. But you can use the plastic eggs. I buttered the inside of the eggs but found the process a bit too messy.
I have made rice Kristie treat candy corn shapes in the past and they turned out hard because they were pressed together too much. The key is to very lightly press into shape.
Hi Debbie – another factor for Rice Krispie Treats that turn out hard is because the marshmallows were melted at too high a heat.
Good morning, should I use a low to medium heat to melt marshmallows and can I use plastic eggs to form them?. Thanks GaryÂ
Hi – yes, melt the marshmallows on a medium-low heat. And yes, you can use the plastic eggs to form them. It is a messy job but it works.
How do you store them?
Hi Angela, we just usually put them in a container separated by parchment paper (or foil).
How many does this recipe make?
Hi Jessica, this recipe will make 6-8 eggs depending on how big you make them.
Could you use liquid food colouring or Wilton gel icing colours? Instead of the Wilton Color Right Performance Color System?
Yes, absolutely!!!
Great, thank you!! 🙂
You can use the plastic eggs to put these in, then surprise on Easter !!!
I just made these with my son! So so easy! I was thinking would take a while mixing with different colors but we were done in about 45 minutes – did 5 colors and each color made 11-12 krispie eggs! Will definitely do this one again!
Yay! We’re so glad you liked the recipe. Happy Easter!!
Thank you for this information. Greatly appreciated.
I followed this recipe exactly and mine turned pretty hard? Any ideas as to why this would happen!
Hi Becky, I think the heat might have been too high when you melted the marshmallows and the butter.
