Pick a Cake

There are three great options for the “cake” part of Strawberry Shortcake and we have all the recipes you’ll need to make any of them.

Option 1:  Pound Cake. So yummy!  The buttery flavor goes perfectly with the strawberries.  We have a homemade Pound Cake recipe that we usually use that is perfect and very easy to make.
Option 2:  We usually use Angel Food cake cut into cubes for Strawberry Shortcake. It is light and delicious and we find that the Betty Crocker Angel Food Cake Mix tastes just as good and is approximately 1 million times easier to make that homemade.
Option 3: And we can’t forget the classic sweet biscuit which we also have a yummy recipe for and is a great go-to Strawberry Shortcake option.

Prepare the Strawberries

Step 4: Soak the strawberries in Vinegar Water (use 3 parts Water/1 part White Vinegar) to clean them. Rinse and dry the strawberries.
Step 5: Slice the strawberries and add them to a bowl.
Step 6: Sprinkle the sliced strawberries with sugar to taste (usually 1/4 cup sugar) depending on how sweet you want the Strawberries to be.
Step 7: Stir the sliced strawberries and sugar until they are coated with sugar. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator (approximately one hour) so they can macerate and get good and juicy.

Make the Homemade Blue Whipped Cream

Steps 8-10: The ingredient that takes our Red White and Blue Strawberry Shortcake from great to spectacular is our blue Colored Whipped Cream.  It is so easy to make, tastes better than Cool Whip or Canned Whipped Cream, and will wow your guests.  You will find all the directions you’ll need To Make Colored Whipped Cream right here.

Assemble the Dessert

Steps 11-12: To assemble the Red White and Blue Strawberry Shortcake, first add a layer of your cake of choice and then a second layer of ripe strawberries. Put the blue Colored Whipped Cream in a plastic bag and cut off the tip of one of the bottom corners. Pipe on the blue whipped cream and your Red White and Blue Strawberry Shortcake is ready to serve to your guests. Try a traditional bowl or serve it in a glass or mason jar.  Your guest will love it!
