For Easter, we made these fun Celebration Marble Cupcakes. They were a HIT!! When we started planning 4th of July desserts, Nancy’s husband said, “you totally should do Celebration Cupcakes in Red, White and Blue.” We hadn’t really thought about it, but we thought it was worth a try. And boy are we glad we did – they turned out adorable!! If he keeps coming up with these good ideas, we are going to have to make him an honorary sister.
How to make Patriotic Marble Cupcakes
- White Cake Mix
- Best Buttercream Frosting
- Wilton Color Right Food Coloring
- Cupcake Liners
- Decorating Bags
- Wilton 2D Decorating Tip
- Cupcake Sprinkles
Start with a box of your favorite White Cake Mix. Mix up the cake batter as indicated on the box. We split the cake batter into three equal portions. We used a food scale to measure each portion but as you can see in these pictures it was approximately 1 cups of cake mix for each color. (You should get 20-24 cupcakes.)
Using Wilton Color Right Food Coloring we tinted the cake batter Red, White and Blue.
Here are the amounts of food coloring that we used to achieve these patriotic colors:
Red = 3 fairly big drops of Wilton Color Right Red Food Coloring
White = No Food Coloring
Blue = 4 drops of Wilton Color Right Blue Food Coloring, 1/2 drop of Red Food Coloring and 1 /4 drop of Pink Food Coloring (Note: we needed to add the tiny amounts of Red and Pink to counteract the yellow tint in the white cake mix and deepen the blue color. Without these additions, the blue was more teal than American Flag blue.)
To make the marble effect we used a small spoon to alternate small drops of colored cake batter into the cupcake liner. There is no wrong way to layer in the colored cake batter – have fun.
Don’t fill the cupcake liners too much or the cupcakes will be too big. They should be filled about 3/4 of the way up.
Here are the Patriotic Marble Cupcakes just out of the oven. They are so pretty, even without frosting.
We made a batch of our Best Buttercream Frosting and colored two portions Red and Blue and left the third portion White.
Finally, we topped our Patriotic Marble Cupcakes with some homemade sprinkles that match the Red White and Blue colors from the frosting! This is super easy to do and really makes your desserts look special! We have all the directions you’ll need to make your own sprinkles right here.
We used a Wilton 2D Frosting Tip to make this frosting swirl but you could also just apply the frosting with a knife.
The inside of the cupcakes is the real wow factor! No two Patriotic Marble Cupcakes will look the same!
We love these Patriotic Marble Cupcakes. This technique makes some of the prettiest cupcakes we have ever made. So bright and colorful. They are guaranteed to be a hit at your 4th of July party, Memorial Day barbecue or even an Olympics viewing party!
