How to Make the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture

Step 1: The base for our Merry Christmas Rice Krispie Bites is our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe which we have adjusted and perfected over the years until it is now absolutely the best Rice Krispie Treat recipe we have ever tasted.  You can find all the directions you’ll need to make these delicious treats right here.

How to Color the Rice Krispie Mixture

Steps 2-3: You need to make three separate 3 cup batches (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal) of Rice Krispie Treat mixture. Tint one red, one green, and leave one white.  Add the food coloring BEFORE you add the Rice Krispie Cereal.

We use Wilton Color Right Food Coloring.  It creates very vibrant colors without having to use a lot of food coloring.  Here are the Food Coloring Formulas we used:

Red:  8 drops of Red
Green: 6 drops of yellow and 3 drops of Blue

Step 4: Pour the first batch of the Rice Krispie Treat mixture into a lightly buttered large cookie sheet.
Step 6: Press down the mixture into the cookie sheet so it forms a strip that takes up approximately 1/3 of the cookie sheet.
Step 6: Do the same thing with the red Rice Krispie Treat mixture.  Try your best to make sure that each strip of Rice Krispie Treats is the same height.
Step 7: And finally repeat the process with the green Rice Krispie Treat mixture.  Don’t press the three colors together. Allow the three strips to cool for 10-15 minutes.

Step 8: Cut the Rice Krispie Treats into squares.  Make sure that the squares are big enough for the Christmas cookie cutters that you are going to use.  We trimmed the uneven edges of the treats so they were all approximately the same size.

Step 9: Pick two squares to make your first pair of treats.  Pick a Christmas Cookie Cutter and make a cut-out on each square.
Step 10: Now switch the cut-outs and put them back in the squares.  The Rice Krispie Treats are sticky from the marshmallow mixture so you will be able to push the shapes back together.

Step 11: Complete the process for all of your Rice Krispie Treat squares.  All the different color combinations are so pretty and festive! Allow the Rice Krispie Treats to completely cool before you store them. They will last 2-3 days at room temperature in an air-tight container before they start to get stale.  You can extend that timeline a few days if you store them in the refrigerator and then take them out about 30 minutes before you eat them.  They freeze up great though and that is what we do if we want to make these ahead of time for a party or a family gathering.  They defrost very quickly and taste great once they are defrosted.  You can keep them in the freezer for up to a couple of months.
