Little Fishy Cupcakes
These adorable Little Fishy Cupcakes are easy and fun and will be a hit with the kids and you just need frosting and some M&M’s to make them.
Laurie and I really set the bar high when we gave Allison’s preschool teacher the Crayon Candy Dish. She still gushes about it when we see her, so when we were talking about bringing cupcakes to Allison’s class for her birthday we wanted to make sure we didn’t disappoint. Laurie and I were knee-deep in planning the Frozen birthday party extravaganza, so I wanted to do something cute and easy. These fish cupcakes fit the bill. All the kids (and the teachers) loved them.
Make a Batch of Cupcakes
Step 1: Make a batch of cupcakes. You can use a cake box mix, we have all the instructions you’ll need to make them taste just like homemade right here. Or you can make them from scratch with our yummy Homemade Vanilla Cupcakes recipe. We used vanilla cupcakes but Chocolate Cupcakes would taste great too.
Make the Frosting
Step 2: The key to these delicious cupcakes is our Best Buttercream Frosting recipe. It is light and creamy and buttery and super delicious! You will find the recipe and directions here. One batch of frosting will be enough to frost 18 cupcakes.
Grab Your M&M’s
Step 3: Next, separate the M&M’s by color. This was from a large bag of M&M’s. You’ll need about 15 M&M’s for the scales for each cupcake and 2 reds for the fish lips.
Color the Frosting
Step 4: Now it is time to tint the frosting. We like the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring. It is concentrated and you can get a bright color without having to use too much food coloring. We split the frosting into four equal parts, added food coloring, and made yellow, blue, green, and pink frosting.
Blue: 2 drops of blue food coloring
Green: 3 drops of yellow food coloring and 1 drop of green food coloring
Yellow: 3 drops of yellow food coloring and 1 drop of orange food coloring
Pink: 2 drops of pink food coloring
How to Create a Little Fishy Cupcakes
Step 5: Use a knife or an offset spatula to frost the cupcake.
Step 6: Start with a row of “fish scales” in the middle of the cupcake. Our cupcakes had enough room for 6 yellow M&M’s. Continue adding rows until you fill up half of the cupcake with M&M fish scales.
Step 7: We used Wilton Candy Eyes for the fisheye but you could also use a mini marshmallow and a dot of black icing.
Step 8: Finally, add two red M&M’s for the fish lips.
Color Options
Step 9: So cute and so very easy to make! And so many color options. We also made some Rainbow Fish Cupcakes by using two colors of M&M’s for the scales instead of one – same technique but a much different look. That’s it! It’s really very easy to make these Little Fishy Cupcakes. This is our favorite kind of project … small time investment but high impact!!!

What size eyeballs did you use the medium or the mini eyes?Â
Would a 10oz sharing size bag of M&Ms be enough to make 24 cupcakes or would I need the 42oz party size bag?
HI – we used the regular sized eyes.
I pinned this post a long time ago, and when my son (8 years) asked for a birthday party with fish theme, I immediately knew we would make these fishy cupcakes together with his little friends. So I prepared a batch of chocolate cupcakes and frosting in advance, and the young bakers turned the cupcakes into fish! Thanks for the great idea, and have a look at the result: http://www.rebekkascraftroom.blogspot.ch/2016/04/des-cupcakes-en-forme-de-poisson.html
Oh my gosh, these are adorable and so simple to do!
Hey! These are super cute. This is a more general question, but after making the cupcakes, do you have to put these in the refrigerator, or is it okay to keep them in containers with a lid? Thanks! I plan to make them today (around 5-6 PM) and then serve them tomorrow morning (around 8 AM).
Hi Crystal, I usually put them in the refrigerator, but if you are making them tonight and serving them tomorrow they are probably fine in an airtight container. Just try to keep them in a cool place.
Did you use a normal size cupcake pan, or a bigger size, I just made cupcakes and they look way to small for all the m&ms to fit.
Hi Jen, we used a normal sized cupcake pan.
can i put the M&Ms on and refrigerate them over night till the party the next day or with the M&Ms bleed?
Hi – we haven’t experienced any bleeding but the M&M’s candy coating will lose it’s shine from the moisture in the refrigerator. They don’t look horrible and taste fine but the M&M’s do cloud over a bit after being after a night in the refrigerator.
Making these adorable cupcakes for my twin granddaughter’s 3rd birthday party and wanted to know how many cupcakes can be frosted with your frosting recipe. I’ll be making 2 dozen cupcakes so should I double the frosting ingredients?
Hi – I think your granddaughter is going to love the cupcakes! They are always a big hit when we make them. The amount of frosting you’ll need will depend on how you frost them. If you spread on the frosting with a knife like we have done here, a single batch should be fine. But if you use a piping bag and a decorating tip and do something fancier, you’ll probably need to make a second batch. Hope that helps!
These are so cute!! I am pinning now..
For your Fishy Cupcakes, how many bags of M & M’s do I need for 60 cupcakes? They are adorable.
Hi Joetta – we bought one of those extra big bags of M&M’s from Costco. We made about 20 cupcakes and had plenty of M&M’s left over. Each cupcake has about 20 M&M’s but I’m not sure how many M&M’s are in a regular sized bag. Hope that helps!
Can You both send to my web page wonderful mouth watering treats ??
how do you make the eyes on the fishy cupcakes?
We bought them at the store. You can get them at any Craft Store. I have also seen them at Target and Walmart in the cake mix aisle.
Wherever Wilton supplies are sold, Walmart, hobby lobby, Michael’s.
I LOVE YOUR SITE…BUT UNFORTUNATELY I AM NOT ON PINTEREST, I AM ONLY ON FACEBOOK. IS THERE ANYWAY YOU COULD SENT THESE ITEM TO FACEBOOK FOR ME SO I CAN MAKE THEM AND SHARE THEM AND SAVE THEM..???
Hi Marilyn. Thanks, I’m so glad you like our site! We do have a Facebook page. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/2SistersCrafting. The Little Fishy Cupcakes are on there too.
Thank you for allowing us to see these beautiful arts and of course Yum Yum’s!!! “God’s Blessing’s”!!!<
These are adorable! We are having my son’s birthday party at the pool and these will be perfect for it!! I was wondering how close to the day you’d recommend making them? Its in 3 days, but I want to start them soon. Thanks for the idea!
Hi Catherine! You could definitely make the cupcakes ahead and freeze them. I wouldn’t frost them too early though. M&M’s sometimes get discolored (they get cloudy) when you freeze them. We made the Fishy Cupcakes the day before and stored them overnight in the refrigerator and they were great the next day for Allison’s birthday party.
Thanks Heather!!
These are seriously the cutest cupcakes EVER! Super creative and so fun for kids and adults too! Pinning and sharing 🙂
I think these are very cute
Stopping over from Kitchen Fun’s link party. These would be perfect for my son’s swim team snack (as long as he’d help me with the m&m’s 🙂 Pinned!
