I know I say this a lot but we just love the way these cupcakes turned out. We were looking to do something different for our Frozen party and we took the frosting technique that we used on our Patriotic Sugar Cookies and turned it into these super cute Frozen Elsa’s Ombre Cupcakes.

How to Make Frozen Elsa’s Ombre Cupcakes

You will need:

Best Buttercream Frosting in Pink, Blue and Ivory

First, we made up a batch of yellow cupcakes using pink and blue cupcake liners.

Next, we whipped up a batch of our Best Buttercream Frosting Recipe.  We split it into three bowls and colored one batch blue , one batch pink and left one bowl white. You can find our recipe for buttercream frosting here.

Here is how we created these pretty “Anna” pink and blue colors:

Anna Blue:  2 drops of Americolor Royal Blue and 2 drops of Americolor Navy food coloring
Anna Pink:  2 drops of Americolor Deep Pink and 2 drops of Americolor Fushia food coloring and then the tiniest bit of Americolor Navy food coloring

Frosting for the Frozen Elsa's Ombre Cupcakes

We made a second batch of our Best Buttercream Frosting Recipe for the Frozen Elsa’s Ombre Cupcakes.  We split it into three bowls and colored one batch dark blue, one batch medium blue and left one bowl white. You can find our recipe for buttercream frosting here.  Here is how we got those pretty Elsa colors:

  • Medium Blue – 2 Drops of Sky Blue Food Coloring
  • Dark Blue – 3 Drops of Sky Blue Food Coloring and 1 Drop of Royal Blue Food Coloring

Wilton Decorating Tip #102

To create the petal effect on the cupcakes we used a Wilton #102 decorating tip.  If you have this specific decorating tip, the cupcakes are really easy to create.  These tips are readily available online and in stores with cake decorating supplies.

Decorating the Frozen Anna Cupcakes

The petal effect is created by piping on a series of loops on the cupcake as shown in the picture above.  (For more detailed instructions (with pictures) on how to create these frosting loops please check out our Patriotic Sugar Cookie post.)  Start with a thin layer of blue frosting on the cupcake. Then pipe on a circle of blue loops.  Next create a smaller circle of pink loops on top of the blue frosting petals.

Decorating the Frozen Anna Cupcakes

Finally, end with an even smaller circle of white frosting petals.
