Flip Flop Cake

One of the girls from my office was leaving and moving to Hawaii, so we had a Hawaiian themed Luau for her.  I volunteered to make the cake. This is my Flip Flop Cake.

How to Decorate a Flip Flop Cake:

Because it was going to be a large event, I decided to take a Costco cake, scrape off the frosting and add my own decorations.  (I have been told you can order the cakes without decorations, but the two times I have used a Costco cake as my base I have waited till the last minute, which if you knew me wouldn’t surprise you at all.)

Sand on the Flip Flop Cake

After scraping off the decorations, I took Nilla wafers and grounded them in the food processor. This is what I used as my sand.   I also baked a cake in a 9×13 pan.  I used one of my husband’s shoes to draw a mold and used the mold to cut a flip flop out of the 9×13 cake.  Once I had my flip flop cut out, I sliced it down the middle to give me two flip flops.  I didn’t want the flip flops to be super thick on top of the cake.

I was then ready to assemble my cake.  I put a base frosting on the flip
flops before I put them on the cake.  I then used a large spatula to lie
each of them on the cake.  I used red licorice to make the thong part.
Originally, I was going to use Fruit by the Foot, but because it was so
flimsy, it wouldn’t hold its shape on the cake.  I also bought some fondant
and used cookie cutters to make flowers.  I had the bright idea of making
enough fondant flowers to and then thread them to make a lei, but the
fondant flowers were too brittle and every time I touched one it broke.  (I
am sure that was operator error.)  Instead of the lei I laid the flowers
around the cake.

I thought the cake turned out cute especially when we put it on our Hawaiian themed cake table.
