Fall Leaves Rice Krispie Treats
These beautiful Fall Leaves Rice Krispie Treats are delicious, easy to make, and perfect for a Thanksgiving Treat or an Autumn potluck dessert.
It doesn’t need to be said (again) that we at Two Sisters are crazy for Rice Krispie Treats. The fact that it just takes a little food coloring to turn something yummy into something yummy and beautiful is the best. We wanted to do something fun to add to our Thanksgiving dessert table and we think we came up with the perfect dessert. The vivid colors of these fall leaves are really going to pop next to our other desserts. And as always … we are sure these will be the first dessert everyone chooses!
Ingredients You Will Need
How to Make the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture
Step 1: The base for our Fall Leaves Rice Krispie Treats is our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe which we have adjusted and perfected over the years until it is now absolutely the best Rice Krispie Treat recipe we have ever tasted. You can find all the directions you’ll need to make these delicious treats right here.
Coloring the Rice Krispie Mixture
Step 2: We made our Rice Krispie Treats in four different Fall colors … Orange, Gold, Green, and Brown. You will need to make four different batches of Rice Krispie Treats, one for each color. Each batch is a 3 cup batch of Rice Krispie Treat mixture. Add the food coloring BEFORE you add the Rice Krispie Cereal.
For each color of Fall Leaf, you are going to make you should melt 3 Tablespoons of butter in a medium pan on medium heat. Add 3 cups of Mini Marshmallows and stir them until they are melted. Now add the food coloring. Once you have the right color, add 3 cups of Rice Krispie cereal. Gently fold the marshmallow mixture and Rice Krispies until all of the cereal is completely covered with the melted butter and marshmallow mixture.
We like the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring. It is concentrated and you can get a bright color without having to use too much food coloring. Here are the formulas we used for our Thanksgiving/Fall colors:
Burnt Orange: 5 drops of orange, 5 drops of yellow, 1 drop of red, and 1/2 drop of brown
Gold: 4 drops of yellow and 2 drops of orange
Sage Green: 8 drops of yellow, 4 drops of blue, and 2 drops of orange.
Red/Brown: 5 drops of brown, 2 drops of crimson, and 1 drop of red.
How to Make the Fall Leaves
Step 3: You will need a leaf cookie cutter. You can find them in the Baking section of your local craft store or on Amazon which is where we bought this Maple Leaf Cookie Cutter. Make one colored batch at a time. Allow the Rice Krispie Treat mixture to cool enough so you can handle it but that it is still malleable. Start filling the leaf cookie cutter to form the maple leaf treats. We like molding the mixture into the cookie cutters this way instead of making a sheet of Rice Krispie Treats and cutting out the shapes like a traditional cookie. You will have smoother and prettier edges this way.
Step 4: Once you have the cookie-cutter filled with the Rice Krispie Treat mixture, press the Rice Krispie Treat out the back of the cookie cutter and make another one. I was able to make 4 Rice Krispie Treats from this 3 cup batch of Rice Krispie Treat Mixture because of the size of cookie cutters we were using.
Step 5: Then make the other batches of Rice Krispie mixture and makes those leaves. Allow the Rice Krispie Treats to cool before you store them. This is a great Fall or Thanksgiving treat and you can make them well ahead. Rice Krispie Treats freeze up great in an air-tight container. And will last for up to a week at Room Temperature.

I want mine to actually taste like maple. Â How would I go about doing this? Maple extract or maple syrup? And if so, how much would I use and at what point in the process?
I would try the Maple Extract or Mapeline. And I would add the extract to the melted marshmallows before you add the Rice Krispie Cereal.
Sadly these turned out pretty bad for us. We followed the directions to a T, but came out with hard as rock Rice Krispie treats when they dried. Any idea what we could have done wrong?
Hi – so sorry to hear this. Hard Rice Krispie Treats usually happen from one of two things … older marshmallows or melting the marshmallows at too high of a heat.
Hi I’m going to have a potluck. I was wondering if I make these in the morning, would they garden after about 6-7 hours?? Also would they stick to each other if I like them on top of one another??
They usually aren’t sticky after they cool. They should be fine.
These are so cute! Looking to make them for a Friendsgiving that I am hosting! I couldn’t find a leaf cutter anywhere! I went to about 5 stores to look. I ended up finding them in a specialty store, and will pick up tomorrow. My question is, can I make them tonight, and then cover them and cut the shapes out tomorrow? Or, will they be too hard? Thanks!
Hi – I would cut them out while they are still semi-pliable. Then you can store them in the refrigerator or freeze them.
Hey.
Any idea on a nore exact amount of food coloring?
Will the wilton brand affect the flavor? I’ve used the mccormack brand in the past to make red, white&blue treats for 4th of july. And to get a really dark red or blue the flavor of the marshamallows changed.
Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi! The Wilton brand is really good … you don’t have to use as much as you do with the McCormack food colorings. We’ve never noticed any change in the taste of the desserts. In this post I have some details on how to make red, orange, gold an d sage. https://www.twosisterscrafting.com/fall-harvest-rice-krispie-bites/ Hope that helps.
What size cookie cutter did you use? I want to put them in treat bags
Hi Phylicia, the cookie cutter we used is just under 4 inches wide and just over 4 inches tall.
Hello! I’m going to make these for a potluck, I was curious how long these usually last? Can I make them a couple days in advance?
Hi Savannah – they should be fine. They also freeze up great wrapped in foil and stored in an airtight container. If it is going to be longer than a day or two, I would freeze them until the day of the potluck. It will take them about 2 hours to defrost. Hope that helps!
Such a fun fall/ thanksgiving treat idea. I’m going to have to try making these. I love the idea Isabelle had of using Jello powder to color and flavor the treat!
I am excited to make these! I have one question: the exact food coloring in the recepie is a link, when opened it shows icing color, is that what should be used or would regular food coloring work too?
Hi Veronica – any food coloring will work. Those are the specific food coloring shades that we used to make our Fall Leave Rice Krispie Treats those pretty fall colors but you can use any food coloring that you might have on hand.
Hello.
Should I make a batch of treats for each color or did you divide the one batch?
Hi. That depends on how many Rice Krispie Treats you want to make and how big your leaf cookie cutters are. You could make four 2 cup batches, each in a different color.
I can’t wait to make these! I’m always looking for cute ideas like this for family and friends.
These are adorable! What a fun idea for any Fall celebration. Very creative 🙂 We will be trying these!
Thanks Gwen! They taste great too!
Just made these awesome threats for our family Thanksgiving feast. My only disappointment is that the burgundy food coloring left a terrible taste. Had to leave them off the plate!
Hi!
Where are you ladies getting the cookie cutter.i cant find a leaf shape anywhere!
Hi – we bought the leaf cookie cutter last Christmas but recently I’ve seen leaf cookie cutters on Amazon and at CookieCutter.com.
How long should I let them set for before cutting them?
Hi Angela – 10-15 minutes should be fine.
Thank you!! We are trying this afternoon!
The picture of the “leaves” is beautiful. I so wanted to make them. To test them I made 1/2 batch, cutting all ingredients in half. I ended up with a sticky mess. The cutter (just like in the picture) wouldn’t cut. My gooey mess stuck to the cutter. I ended up making Rice Krispey balls.
What am I missing?
I will give it another try if you can help me figure out what went wrong.
Hi Gloria – I think the ration of marshmallow mixture to Rice Krispie Treats might have been off. Try a little more Rice Krispie cereal in the next batch. Also, maybe let the finished sheet of Rice Krispie Treats set a little longer before you use the cookie cutter. They will be easier to cut-out if they aren’t still warm. Hope that helps! Happy Thanksgiving!
How many dose the rice Krispy make?
Hi. It really depends on what size cookie cutter you use and how thick you make them.
Whenever i want to color my rice krispies treats i add a pack of jello powder to the melted marshmallows. It add color AND flavor!
