DIY Ladybug Costume

I never knew it would be so hard to come up with a Halloween costume for a 2 year old. There is too much to choose from. Laurie and I looked around Halloween costume shops, but they were all stupid. Then one of us (I don’t remember which, but I suspect it was Laurie) said we could make Allison a cuter costume. We went to Pinterest typed in Halloween costumes and decided to make a DIY Ladybug Costume. It was nicer than anything we would have bought and not that expensive. In the end, we were very happy with the way it turned out.

How to Make a DIY Ladybug Costume

Project Supplies:

  • Black Crochet Headband
  • Red Tulle
  • Black Tulle
  • Large Black Pom Poms
  • Large Red Pom Poms
  • Black Plastic Headband
  • Small Piece of Red Feather Boa
  • Red Costume Butterfly Wings
  • Black T-Shirt

Use a Black Crochet Headband for Ladybug Costume bodice

We used a black crochet headband as the bodice for the DIY Ladybug Costume.  You can find these in any craft store or online store like Amazon.  If you crochet, you could just make one.  The headbands are a little see-through so we had Allison wear a black T-Shirt under the tutu dress.

Making the tutu dress by attaching tulle to the black crochet headband

You will also attach the tulle strips to the black headband to create the DIY Ladybug Tutu dress.  This is a no-sew costume project.   I wanted the skirt to be 20″ long so I cut my pieces of tulle in 40″ pieces using a yard stick as a measuring device.  Each loop I put on was actually two pieces of tulle.  Check out our DIY Peacock Costume post for detailed instructions and pictures for how I knotted the pieces of tulle onto the headband.  By attaching the tulle with the loop down and bringing the edges of the tulle down through the loop you will have the knot in the front instead of the inside of the elastic.  This part of the DIY Ladybug Costume is super easy to do.

Adding black strip in the front of the Ladybug Tutu dress

The bulk of the Tutu dress was red but we added this strip of black tulle in the front to represent the bottom of a ladybug.

Black pom poms become the ladybug dots

We used a hot glue gun to attached some large black yarn pom poms to the ladybug tutu dress to represent the ladybug spots.  We only put the pom poms on the front and side of the dress because we didn’t want them to come off when Allison sat down in the costume.

Red Butterfly wings

We bought these red butterfly wings on Amazon.  They were so reasonably priced that they ended up being cheaper than making them.

Ladybug Costume headpiece

The Ladybug Headpiece was a quick little DIY craft project.  We took a white plastic headband and wrapped it in black satin ribbon.  Then we twisted two black pipe cleaners to the headband for the antennae.    We used the hot glue gun to attach these large red yarn pom poms to the end of the pipe cleaners.   And then glued some small black circles to the pom poms.  Finally, we found a small piece of red feather boa at Michael’s and wrapped that around the headband as an extra embellishment.  It looked really cute and took about 15 minutes to make.  Our favorite kind of craft.

DIY Ladybug Costume

This was a really easy project and turned out so cute.  I think any little girl would love this poufy, tutu dress DIY Ladybug Costume.
