How to Make the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture
Step 1: The base for our Christmas Rice Krispie Treats Bites is our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe which we have adjusted and perfected over the years until it is now absolutely the best Rice Krispie Treat recipe we have ever tasted. You can find all the directions you’ll need to make these delicious treats right here.
How to Color the Rice Krispie Mixture
Step 2: We made our Christmas Rice Krispie Bites in three different Christmas colors … Red, Green, and White (not shown above.) You will need to make three different batches of Rice Krispie Treats, one for each color. For each color of Rice Krispie Treat Bite make a 3 cup batch of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal). Add the food coloring BEFORE you add the Rice Krispie Cereal.
Here are the Food Coloring Formulas we used:
White: No Food Coloring
Red: 8 Drops of Crimson, 2 drops of Red
Green: 6 drops of yellow and 3 drops of Blue
For some extra Christmas pizzazz, liberally add some Nonpareils Christmas Sprinkles to the warm Rice Krispie Treat mixture.
How to Make the Rice Krispie Treat Bites
Step 3: To make the Rice Krispie Treat Bites, allow the mixture to cool enough so you can handle it but that it is still malleable. To get Rice Krispie Bites that were the same sized I measured .6 oz. of the mixture on my food scale and then used my hands to roll it into a ball. If the mixture is too sticky, rub your fingers with some butter. I was able to make 12 Rice Krispie Treat Bites from each 3 cup batch of Rice Krispie Treat Mixture.

These are THE CUTEST! I’d be so torn on whether to keep it as is or eat them!
Sooo easy to make and I put them in the freezer
Everyone young & old at our family Christmas party liked this treat. I came home with empty dish
Do you have to store them in fridge/ freezer if making 2 days ahead of time?
I’d store them in the freezer.
Love this,Using it for my welsh bacc project in school:)
Hi. This is a cute idea! I’m thinking I’ll add a wrapped rolo candy on each ball and they will look like ornaments. Making the balls a little larger than the bites.Put them in a beautiful bowl and arrange festive greenery around the bottom.
Great idea!
How can you keep the mixture from getting too hard to mold into a ball, or what can you do if it does ??
Hi Betty! Do you mean the mixture sat out to long before you started molding it into the balls? Or are the Rice Krispie too crunchy in general? If the later – there are usually two culprits: old marshmallows and melting the marshmallows on too high of heat.
How to do you get the balls to not be rock hard?
Hi Sabrina! Rice Krispie Treats usually get hard like that when you melt the marshmallows too quickly at too high a heat. Hope that helps!
You are such a lifesaver with this recipe! The only question I have is, how many does this make?
Hi Lesa – It really depends on how big you make them. We made about 25 out of each 3 cup back of Rice Kripsie Treat mixture.
Hi. If i make these. How long can they sit before being served without freezing?
Hi Stacie – a couple days in an air-tight container.
Where can I find this food coloring? Any alternatives?
Hi Rebecca – they sell it in the baking supply section at craft stores. You can also get it from Amazon.com. But you can use any red and green food coloring you have on hand.
I have a quick question. I know from past experiences with red food coloring (liquid, gel, paste) that to get a bright red you end up being able to taste the food dye. Can you taste this type of red?
Hi Elaine, I have had that happen with black food coloring. It’s so annoying, but we have had really good luck with the Americolor Super Red.
Hey Elaine! They also have colored gels for baking that taste sweet! You don’t need to use much for good pigment!
