In our family, Christmas isn’t Christmas without Sugar Cookies and Buttercream Frosting.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean we have to drag out the rolling pin every year … Sugar Cookies Bars taste just as good (or maybe even better?) This year we tried something different … we used a marbling technique to add some festive Red, White, and Green to our classic dessert.  We love how these Christmas Marble Sugar Cookie Bars turned out and I have a feeling they have earned a place on our annual Christmas Must-Bake List.

Step 1: Mix softened butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs and mix. Add dry ingredients and mix just until combined.

Step 2: Separate the dough into three equal portions. We used a food scale but you can eyeball it if you don’t have one of those. Leave one portion of the dough white and color the other two red and green. We used our Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System in the following combinations:

Green –  5 drops of Yellow, 2 drops of Blue
Red – 4 drops of Crimson

Step 3: Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.  Take the white dough, break it up into small pieces and drop it randomly onto the cookie sheet. Now do the same thing with the Red and Green cookie dough.

Step 4: Place another piece of parchment paper over the cookie dough and press the dough down into the cookie sheet. Get it as even as possible.  You want the dough to be about 3/4″ high.  If it doesn’t fill the entire cookie sheet … don’t worry about it. It will still bake up fine.
Step 5: Bake the Christmas Marble Sugar Cookie Bars in a 375-degree oven for 10-15 minutes.  Do not overbake the cookies.  Use a toothpick to test it, if the toothpick comes out clean it is done.  If you bake these too long they will be dry.

How to Make the Frosting

Step 6: As the cookie bars are cooling, make a batch of our yummy homemade Buttercream Frosting.  You can find the recipe and all the detailed instructions here.
Step 7: We tinted our frosting a pretty shade of Christmas Red.  Please note that you will need a double batch of our frosting if you want a nice thick layer of icing.

Step 8: Finally we added Christmas Sprinkles to the frosting.  Cut the Christmas Marble Sugar Cookies bars into squares – don’t they look pretty?  No two are alike! These Christmas Marble Sugar Cookie Bars are super delicious and a unique take on the traditional frosted sugar cookie. We predict that you will be going back to this recipe again and again. Merry Christmas everyone!
