Christmas Decorating in a Small Space

I love to decorate for Christmas.  It is never too early for me.  If I wouldn’t be judged too harshly I would put up my Christmas decorations right after Halloween just like they do at Target and the Mall.   And for me, the more decorations the better.  But having lived much of my adult life in apartments, I have had to learn how to creatively decorate so I could have room to use all of my decorations. Here are some strategies I have used over the years when Christmas decorating in a small space.

Christmas Decorating in a Small Space

Holiday Candy Jars with Christmas Candy

The first thing I do is replace my normal decor with my Christmas decorations instead of just trying to intersperse the Christmas with the regular decor.  I put all my regular mantle decorations in the Christmas boxes where these decorations came from and put them in temporary storage for the month of December.  This helps me focus on a decorative theme – like the red and white, Santa theme I have going on here and create a visual impact.  If this was the only Christmas decoration I had room to put up, it would be more than enough to create a warm Christmas atmosphere. I like to emphasize my Holiday Candy Jars craft project, filled in the picture above with red and white candy.  This candy jar is one of my most favorite crafts – I decorate it with Easter candy, 4th of July Candy and Halloween Candy.

Christmas Decorations on the Mantle

Another thing I try to do is carry my Christmas theme up the wall.  If you don’t have a lot of surface space on which to set Christmas stuff, this is a great alternative surface to hang Christmas wall decorations.  I hung my resin Santa wall hanging, my ornament wreath and my DIY frame wreath.

Unconventional Christmas Wreath

I was inspired to make this unconventional wreath from a post on Pinterest. I painted an old frame with red craft paint, added some red and white glass ornaments on some ribbon and finished with a Christmas bow.

Lantern filled with Christmas Ornaments

I also like to include my DIY christmas decorations along with my store bought ones.  This is an inexpensive lantern that I bought at Ikea this summer.  I filled it with red and white Christmas balls and added it to my Red and White Santa Christmas Mantle.

Santa Boots filled with Candy Canes

I filled my Santa Boots that I found at Hobby Lobby with candy canes to tie in my Red and White theme.

Santa in front of the fireplace

And I placed my big Santa that I have had forever and ever in front on my fireplace and between by two tinsel trees.  The perfect finishing touch to my Red and White Santa corner.  This space is only about four feet wide and I think I’ve really maximized it’s potential.  You can’t do any better than that when Christmas decorating in a small space.
