I found this chocolate cookie recipe years ago, and I use it as a base for so many recipes.   When Laurie and I were looking for a fun cookie recipe for Valentine’s Day, we looked no further than this recipe.  We decided to change it up a little and add the Valentine’s colored M&M’s and what we ended up with were these delicious and beautiful Chocolate Valentine’s Day M&M Cookies that your family are going to love!

Step 3: Cream together the butter and white and brown sugars.
Step 4: Add the eggs and the vanilla to the bowl.
Step 5: Beat until light and fluffy.
Step 6: Add in the dry ingredients 1 cup at a time.  Pulse your stand mixer/mixer otherwise, the mixture will go EVERYWHERE.  On my stand mixer, we turn it on 1 then quickly turn it off.  Repeat this quite a few times until the flour mixture starts to incorporate into the wet ingredients. Trust us this will save yourself a huge mess to clean up later.

Step 7:  Mix just until the flour mixture is incorporated into the dough.  Do not overmix once you have added the flour.  That will make for a tough dry cookie.
Step 8: To keep the cookies similar in size, measure 1.8 oz. of dough for each cookie on a food scale. Roll the dough into balls and put them on a prepared cookie sheet.

Steps 9-12: Randomly press the M&M’s onto the cookie dough ball. This will allow the colorful M&M’s to show up on the top of the baked cookies. You need to cover the entire cookie dough ball with M&M’s or when they back you will end up with a big chocolate cookie with only a couple of M&M’s in the middle of it.

Baking Instructions

Expert Tips and FAQS

Why did the M&M’s crack?

Don’t worry about any broken M&M’s. This happens when the M&M candies start to cool when you take them out of the oven – totally normal.  The cookies still taste great and the cracks give them character!

How long will the cookies stay fresh?

These cookies should be stored in an airtight container.  And they will stay fresh longer if they are completely cool before you pack them up.  We usually add a layer of parchment paper between each row of cookies in our plastic container.  They will stay fresh at room temperature for 2-3 days if you store them correctly in an air-tight container. They will last up to 3 months in the freezer.
