The Best Ever Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
We’ve perfected this The Best Ever Rice Krispie Treats Recipe over the years and it makes the best Rice Krispie Treats (in under 15 minutes) that we’ve ever tasted!
Whenever we post a fun Rice Krispie Treats dessert, we get a ton of questions about how to make the perfect Rice Krispie Treat. While I’m not a Rice Krispie Treats expert, I feel like I am definitely ready to turn pro. I’m just waiting for a big signing bonus from one of the top schools. Our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe is tried and true. They are always the first dessert to disappear from a holiday or party dessert table. Here is my doctored recipe and tips for whipping up the perfect Rice Krispie Treat. (And you can do it in less than 15 minutes!) We hope your family enjoys them as much as our family does!
Ingredients You Will Need
How to Make the Marshmallow Mixture
Step 1: Melt 8 tablespoons of butter in a large saucepan on medium-low heat. We like soft and buttery Treats so we use more butter in our recipe than most other recipes out there. Trust us, it makes a difference in the taste.
Step 2: Don’t melt the butter too fast or on too high a heat. (Browned Butter Rice Krispie Treats are yummy, but that’s another recipe!)
Step 3: Add 8 cups of Mini Marshmallows to the melted butter.
Step 4: Stir the marshmallows so they are completely covered in the melted butter.
Step 5: On medium-low heat, stir the marshmallows continually until they are completely melted.
Step 6: As soon as the marshmallows are melted, take the pan off the heat. Marshmallows that are melted too quickly or heated too long can make your Rice Krispie Treats too hard and crunchy.
Adding the Rice Krispie Cereal
Step 7: Add 8 cups of Rice Krispie Cereal to the marshmallow mixture.
Step 8: Gently fold the Rice Krispie Cereal into the marshmallow mixture.
Step 9: Working quickly, keep folding the mixture until every piece of cereal is covered in the marshmallow mixture.
Pouring the Mixture into the Pan
Step 10: Spoon the mixture into a 9×13″ pan. You don’t need to grease the pan, the butter in the Rice Krispie Treats will allow the squares to easily release from the pan.
Step 11: Lightly press the mixture into the pan. You don’t want to press the mixture down too compactly, just smooth the top with a spatula or butter your fingers and pat down the top.
Step 12: Let them cool and then cut them into squares. That’s it. So very easy. You’ll be done in less than 15 minutes!
The Secret to Amazing Rice Krispie Treats
We have found that the secret to soft and amazing Rice Krispie Treats is Fresh Marshmallows. Fresh Marshmallows do not stick together. They do not stick together when you take them out of the bag. They pour easily into the measuring cup. If you have ever had Rice Krispie Treats that are a bit too hard and crunchy, the culprit is usually old marshmallows, so save the old ones for the hot chocolate and use a new bag for this recipe.
Marshmallow Conversion Chart
We recommend using Mini Marshmallows for this recipe but if you only have regular sized Marshmallows or Jumbo sized Marshmallows on hand the marshmallow conversions are as follows:
- 1 cup of Mini Marshmallows = 9 Regular Sized Marshmallows
- 1 cup of Mini Marshmallows = 2 1/2 Jumbo Sized Marshmallows
How to Color Rice Krispie Treats
One of the many great things about this class dessert is that they don’t have to be beige! You can use this recipe as the base for many fun and creative and colorful Rice Krispie Treat desserts.
It is so easy to do … the trick is when to add the food coloring which is AFTER the marshmallows are melted and BEFORE you add the Rice Krispie Treats.
And if you need some help choosing a pretty color, we have a comprehensive Rice Krispie Treats Color Guide with all of our food coloring formulas for every color in the rainbow!
How to Store/Freeze Rice Crispy Treats
Rice Krispie Treats are eaten very quickly by our family but here are some guidelines for storing them. They will last 2-3 days at room temperature in an air-tight container before they start to get stale. You can extend that timeline a few days if you store them in the refrigerator and then take them out about 30 minutes before you eat them. They freeze up great though and that is what we do if we want to make these ahead of time for a party or a family gathering. They defrost very quickly and taste great once they are defrosted. You can keep them in the freezer for up to a couple of months.

Making this recipe for 2nd time i just use some vanilla and it definitely is the best recipe ive found I don’t normally leave comments on blogs but hats off to u me and my hubby love it my daddy loves rkt so making him his own batch taking them to him and my mom I’m sure they will fall in love too lol thanks!
My daughter and I did a batch of regular rice crispies with some good Mexican vanilla and then a batch of fruity pebbles and layered the fruity pebbles on top of the regular in a single dish!
A full box of each, with a respective full bag of mini marshmallows and full stick of butter in each batch.
It was awesome!
First batch mixed up… now for the agonizing wait for it to cool down…
I added a bag and half jelly tots for added spots of flavor.
Had a very nice consistancy, so hoping it turns out perfect… well how could it not!
Made these they were awesome did put some vanilla in them and did 2 cups of fruity peebles 6 rice Krispy bc fruity pebbles very sweet lol but out of all recipes I looked at loved this one just counted out my req marshmallows bc didn’t have minis made sure to not over heat butter turned out great
It makes the best Rice Krispie Treats we’ve ever tasted!
This is my favorite Rice Krispie great recipe!! It’s truly the best!!
good!
these were delicious !! thanks for the awesome recipe ! will definitely make these again !!
Good Recipe! I’ve always used the original recipe from the Rice Krispies box. I add a little color and a different flavor by using 4 cups of regular Rice Krispies and 4 cups of Cocoa Krispies. Just mix them together before adding to the marshmallow. Beige and brown treats with a hint of chocolate flavor. And yes, I just looked thru the posted comments and saw someone else had the same thought. It’s Good!
Wow. These were literally the best Rice Krispies i have ever had. The secret truly is in the salted sweet buttercream and that marshmallow to rice ratio. I added a layer of semisweet chocolate on top and it was sinfully good.
Thank you SO much for sharing this – I’m a permanent follower now!
I never leave comments, but this recipe was PERFECT. Seriously the best ever rice krispie treat I’ve ever had.
This was a good one! And I agree – fresh marshmallows are the best! I did one recipe tweak – I added 2 tsp of vanilla to make mine extra indulgent!
here’s a tip: if you need to press the marshmallow down without it sticking to anything, wet your hands! the marshmallows do NOT like water 🙂
This is my favorite Rice Krispie great recipe!! It’s truly the best!!
Hi! I used sprouted “rice crisps” and added protein powder for a “healthier” treat for my teenage age athlete. They are so yummy! I’m trying not to eat them.
You’ve really done a great, thorough job here! From perfecting your own butter ratio to providing the measurements for large and mini marshmallows to a complete coloring guide, I must say I’m impressed and thank you for giving out such a complete recipe. No need to have to check a second or even third source for changes or alterations. Well done!
Made half the portion. Turned out really good and soft!
Thanks for sharing this recipe. Your blog is my go-to when I need to make a sweet and I want it to be perfect the first time. I’ve never made Rice Krispie Treats before because I don’t really like them, but my family requested some and this recipe was great. I even thought they were tasty! Thanks for being someone I can count on!
These are amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing, I will never go back to the original recipe, this one is the best!
I’ve attempted to make RK treats dozens of times in my life… every single time I absolutely hated it because when it came time to combine the cereal into the marshmallow goo it was next to impossible to stir because there was never enough goo for the amount of cereal and it resulted in hand and arm cramps and a whole lot of profanity. This is the first time I’ve made them where I thought… that was easy… exactly the way someone SHOULD think about a no-bake recipe with 3 ingredients. RK treats are my husband’s favorite thing in the world and I dread every time he asks me to make them (which isn’t often because he knows how much I hate it). Now I can tell him he can ask any time he wants… I did add a couple drops of vanilla because… yum. I have only managed to lick the spatula so far (they are still cooling) but I had to leave the review while I was thinking about it. THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME!! <3
I have a sweet tooth but haven’t thought about making rice krispies for ages. Thanks for the inspiration
You’re welcome! This is a fun dessert for any age!
My 1st attempt on making this came out bad. It was rock hard and i ended throwing them. Then i came across yours and i tried using your tips and recipe it came out Perfect! Thank you ♡
Yay! We are so happy to hear that! Thanks for visiting our website!
Turned out wonderful ! Thanks for the recipe
everyone I’ve made these for tell me they are the best RKTs they’ve ever had and I tell them “Well the recipe does says ‘best ever'”
Yay!!! So glad you like them! (Me too!)
If I use a 9 by 13 inch would it be too thin? Or would I need to make double batch?
I like to mix in about 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips right before I spread it into the 9×11 pan. They will melt a little but that’s ok. After I press the treats down, I sprinkle more mini chocolate chips all over and press them down again.
Yum! That sounds delicious.
They’re so addictive to eat…so I don’t make them often. I always add a splash of vanilla extract (from Mexico). Thank you for sharing all your delicious recipes!
I love the vanilla in them. Got mine from Mexico too!
A different twist, melt 1 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips and 1 cup of butterscotch chips, mix together and pour over the rice crispy treats. Delicious!
Yum!!!
Made with fruity pebbles. Mmmmm.
We are going to have to try that. I bet they were pretty!
I found some Horchata crisps and thought, humm generic crisps yes, but amazing as a treat for Christmas gift snacks…
Btw If you want to make this with cocoa pebbles, just use the same measurements. it will be more tough but it still tastes delicious!
How long are they good for?
In the freezer – for a good long time and they defrost very quickly. I think they last for weeks in the refrigerator and at least a week in a plastic bag on the counter. All though they usually don’t last that long in our house.
It took me a long time to figure out how to make them like they are store bought. The secret is using the frosted Rice Krispies. Once you try it you will totally get the difference in flavor and texture. I have to hunt for the frosted ones but totally worth my effort.
Pretty hard to “press into pan” as the goo is super sticky. Damp hands works great, though!
You can also put a little butter on your hands and press it down into the pan.
You can also use wax paper to help press into pan.
Can you tell me how many of the jumbo marshmellows I would use to make this?
2 Jumbo Marshmallows = approximate 1 cup of Mini Marshmallows
20 jumbo marshmallows worked for me
Made a gluten and corn free version using Crispy brown rice orangic brand cereal and dandies all natural vanilla marshmallows. Took longer to melt and had to mix it with hand in pan to make sure all the rice cereal mix in but it was delicious and was safe for my son’s allergies! Yum!
It tells you to use a medium pan I would suggest a dutch oven pan It make stirring much easier
My hubby requested making these with more butter and vanilla. I came across your recipe and decided to make these but also added 3 tsps vanilla. My husband wants to marry me again!! Needless to say, they were a big hit with the family! Thx!
Ha ha ha ha! This made me laugh out loud. Hooray for Rice Krispie Treats!
Definitely the best homemade Rice Kripsy Treats I’ve ever had! My family insists that I make them at least once a week now!
Once a week! Can we come live at your house?
My daughter is allergic to dairy, would margarine work I stead of butter?
It will work!
how many marshmellows in 10oz? Only have a 1 lb bag of marshmellow.
use Fruity Pebbles instead, (they are gluten free) also use flavored Marshmallows. Add a few scoops of peanut butter.
How long should I wait before I cut them? I tried waiting 20 minutes but they are still extremely sticky?
It might take an hour for them to completely cool.
My daughter is allergic to dairy. Could I use something like Cojuntry Crock
As long as it melts, it should work fine.
Any tips on how I can make this Halloween themed.
Hi! We have many Halloween-themed Rice Krispie Treats. You can find them here: https://www.twosisterscrafting.com/category/holidays/halloween/
This is a great recipe but for some added flavor I use about 12-15 drops of lorAnn oils to the melted marshmallows. Choose any flavor you like. My family’s favorite is raspberry. I’ve tried about 10 different flavors and they are all good.
Making green (Key lime) and red(raspberry) for Christmas.
I’m a horrible cook but can make a mean rice crispy.
I’m making orange pumpkin shaped ones for a Halloween party we are having with my cousins tomorrow
Damn these are good ! Thanks for the recipie !
How many does a 9×11 pan serve
It depends on how big you want each Rice Krispie Treat to be. We usually get 12-14 from this size pan.
I have left over marshmallows from camping – they are a bit sticky, and have some in the cupboard that are a bit hard. Can these still be used for making Krispie treats, or what would you suggest to use them in?
I don’t think these will work. When you have hard Rice Krispie Treats it is usually because you use older, sticky marshmallows like this.
I don’t make desserts I’m type 1 diabetic so do u actually bake these because there is no directions on what temp to bake or how long.
Hi, no need to bake. You just melt the butter and marshmallow mixture on the stove and then mix-in the Rice Krispie Cereal.
My favorite recipe! My daughters and husband love them and so do I !
I am 59 years old. I made this several times a year with my mother from the age of 10. I remember the original recipe which she got off the cereal box .
1 stick butter
1 bag Marshmallows (minus about 6) But we put it all in
6 cups rice cereal
1 teas vanilla (or more)
I make brown butter bourbon ones… I brown the butter on the stove before adding 1/4 cup good bourbon. Allow the alcohol to burn off. and then finish as usual. Do not omit the vanilla.
How many does this batch make?
It depends on how big you want the individual treat to be. We usually get about 12-14 from a pan this size.
I like to mix half regular and half chocolate rice krispies.
I love rice crispy treats but if you really want something special use honey bunches of oats. The hard part is cutting the bars afterwards because of the oat clusters.
These sound so yummy but I need to ask do I use salted butter or non salted ?
I usually use salted butter. But non salted will work too.
Salted
These came out perfect!! My son lovessss them thank you.
Ps..this was my first time ever making these treats and I’m 32 lol
Yay!!! So glad you like them!
So last year i found a recipe for banana bread that called for a half cup of sour cream in it. It REALLY boosted the flavor! While melting the marshmallows, i remembered how much better the bread was with sour cream so……….. I added a little less than half cup to the marshmallows before they were all melted, and let me tell you….. WOW!! with the Two Sisters amazing recipe with their tips and tricks, and adding the sour cream to the mix, there isn’t a better Krispie treat on this planet!! I hope you all try it, and share the sour cream secret to anyone who loves to bake, because i have started adding it to many recipes, and every time, the result is… Simply put…. Perfection!! Thank you, Sisters! And…. You’re welcome! 😉
There is conflicting information online as to how many ounces of marshmallows per cup. How many ounces of marshmallows for your recipe?
Hi Jess – I have never measured it on the scale. For a pan of Rice Krispie Treats I would use 6 cups of Mini Marshmallows but next time I make a batch I will measure the marshmallows on a food scale and let you know.
I had cinnamon rice crispies so I made cinnamon rice crispy treats. I think a weight measurement would be awesome since I don’t keep mini marshmallows around but sometimes have bigger ones. I cut mine to make them easier to melt but I had no idea if I had the right amount. Luckily this recipe is forgiving.
Its a 10 oz bag
A 10 oz. bag of marshmallows worked perfectly for me.
A 10 oz. bag of the mini marshmallows is equal to 6 cups (the bag states it has 9 servings and 1 serving is 2/3 cup, so that equals 6 cups in a bag).
Personally, when I make these, I use 1 1/2 bags (= 9 cups) of the mini marshmallows per 6 cups of rice krispies. It turns out SUPER soft and yummy!!!!
A 10 oz. bag is equal to 6 cups. Most mini marshmallows come in 10 oz. bags
I make these for our deployed troops. I add 1/2 cup peanut butter. Yum
Yum! That sounds good.
They are sweet. They are quick and easy to make. I really like this recipe
yum this is so good
my children and husband love it
My daughter made these for a school bake sell and they sold out!!!!!!!
I recommend making these.☺
That is great! We are so happy to hear people liked them!!!
Hi there , Happy Memorial Day everyone! So I was bored a lil earlier today and decided to make some crispie treats(cuz who doesn’t love Crispie Treats, am I right?). Since they are like my personal favorite I make them pretty often and so I’m always cruising the internet looking for different recipes or new ideas to add to the mix and today I found the two sisters crafting site. I tried your recipe and OMG! Honestly I think it’s better than other recipes. It’s the extra butter. Makes them creamier. I read the comments and decided to leave a comment ( I rarely ever do) . I made my batch with violet food dye just cuz. Oh also, yes u can use the marshmallow goo as I call it instead of mellows. Just one 7 oz jar . I suppose You could add 3 more oz of mellows if u want. Next time I want to cookie cut them into shapes. Can anyone tell me how I would go about doing this ? Please . Thanks a lot for ur delish recipe and listening to me ramble. Peace n Love everyone!
Hi Rachel – so happy to hear you loved the recipe. We tried a lot of variations of this over the years until we got it just right. I use cookie cutters all the time. There are two ways. You can spoon the mixture into the cookie cutter and press it down around the inside of the cookie cutter. This gives the finished Rice Krispie Treat cleaner edges. You can also press the mixture down onto a cookie sheet and then use the cookie cutter to cut out the treats like you would in sugar cookie dough.
Is there a special cutting tool you use to cut them into perfect squares? I want to make crispy treat pops for an animal shelter fundraiser and i want them to look professional. I found a brownie pan with the cutter piece but it cuts them so small. I’d like them to be 3”x3”.
You could use a square biscuit cutter. They have those on Amazon.
I always use marshmallow creme instead of marshmallows. One 7 ounce jar of marshmallow creme was not enough, they were just a bit too dry. I added one full 7 ounce jar plus half of another one, so between 3-4 ounces more.
Whenever you use the marshmallow cream do you still use some butter?!?
Thankxxxx
Step 7 was really hard for me! I quartered the recipe and they came out perfect, thanks guys! Fun fact, 8 regular size marshmallows is 1 cup 🙂
This must be two sisters witch crafting with the 666 measurements. Haha! Jk, these are sinfully delicious. Kids love them 🙂
LOL!!! So glad you liked the recipe!
i am in love with these amazing treats! thank u thank u thank u!!!!!
Wait! No vanilla?!
Adding vanilla makes it even better!
Add 1-1 1/2 cups of peanut butter to the butter stage, you will need to adjust the Marsh Mello and crispys accordingly but you’ll win every competition there is!
Yum …. great idea!
If you add the peanut butter do you need more mashies and crispies or less? thanks
Love the recipe….can you freeze them? I need to make A LOT and want to make them ahead of time. How will they store?
Hi Dyanna – YES! They freeze up great. We’ve done the same thing many times. We wrap them up in aluminum foil with waxed paper between the layers of the Rice Krispie Treats. They taste just as good when they defrost as they did when they are first made.
Thank you so much Laurie! I am doing double batches and on my 3rd…. will do the others tomorrow.
Dyanna’s Design Bakery, LLC., CA
hi
Im making and coloring these for my little guys party and i need a lot. how many batches did you do and how many did it make?
Hi – i really depends on how big you make them and what shape they will be in. Are you making traditional squares?
One of the favorites at our house is to add raisins. Gives the bars a burst of tart fruit flavor. Really yummy!
Yum! That sounds good.
How much does this recipe make? I feel like 6 cups is a lot? Or does it only make one pan?
Hi – it does seems like a lot but you need that much to fill a 9×13 inch pan.
This is a great recipe. Even better than others. I like to melt some good dark chocolate slowly in double boiler and spread a thin layer over the cooled treats before cutting. Yum. Thank you again.
So glad you liked it! Thanks for letting us know!
I like to make these for Valentine’s Day treats for my kids. To make them extra special I top them with melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and dip them in rainbow sprinkles!
Yum! That sounds delicious.
I throw in a little extra sugar. Yum.
The best ever. I have made them several times and decided to leave a comment.
I added a half teaspoon of vanilla to the marshmallows and that made them even better.
I never stick to a recipe.
Thanks.
The vanilla sounds like a fun addition. You can never had too much vanilla!
You’re definitely right. These are the best rice crispy treats. I make them all the time for my grand daughter. Everton loves them!
Hi Lydia! So glad you enjoyed the recipe. We love it too!
Fantastic, my mum and younger sister are both gluten free and luckily rice crispier cereal makes gluten free stuff now (it’s weird that rice crispier weren’t gluten free in the first place) and it was really tasty. I rolled them into balls instead of squares (I don’t know why) and my little sister is going to bring them to her preschool as a Christmas party treat. Thanks for the great recipe!
We are so glad you like them.
After melting the butter and marshmallows, I sometimes mix in a half cup of peanut butter before adding the cereal. A half to a full cup depending on how others like peanut butter.
I WANT TO ADD FOOD COLORING AND FLAVOR
IS THIS OK TO USE..
YES!!! We do that all the time. Add the flavoring and the food coloring before you add the Rice Krispies.
Thank you for this recipe. I used half sheet pans as the molds to make very thin treats. Then I slathered them with either nutella or raspberry jam and put another thin treat on top. This let me make stuffed rice crispy treats that were devoured.
That sounds delicious! We are going to have to try that at our next party.
Can I add fresh blueberries/ Just folding them in before turning into pan?
Hi Debby, I’m not sure how this will work. I might be hard to fold them into the Rice Krispie Treat mixture without crushing them. We’d be curious to hear how it turns out if you try it. Good luck!
I’ve done it before but I froze fresh blueberries before so they held up a bit better. they that while the bars cool.
This recipe is awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you like it!
My young teen son just made his first desert on his own using your recipe. He felt a big sense of accomplishment and is excited to cook more things for us. Thanks for sharing!
We love to read things like this!!
My husband and I have never used sweet cream salted butter, is it better than using regular salted butter?
Hi … not better it is just what we normally use. We like the subtle salt taste it gives Rice Krispie Treats but you can definitely use whatever butter you normally have in the fridge. Thanks for visiting the site!
The kids and I just tried this receipe and loved it thank you so much
So glad you guys liked it.
IS it okay to use unsalted butter? Can I expect the same results?
Hi Kelsey, yes it’s okay.
Can i use the big big jumbo marshmallows if so how much for this recipe
We have never made Rice Krispie Treats with the jumbo marshmallows. If I were you, I would cut the marshmallows into fours so they are closer to the size of mini marshmallows and easier to measure out the 6 cups.
1 jumbo marshmallow = 1/2 cup minis, so you hould use 12 jumbos
The 10 oz bag of kraft mini marshmallows is 6 cups, so i assume 10 oz of jumbo marshmallows would work
I made this using your recipe for my mom, sister and nephew. They loved it. Mom had never had them before (they have celiac spru and are gluten free by necessity not by choice). Did you know Kellogg’s Rice Krispies are not Gluten Free? Malt-O-Meal does make them GF though, so I was able to surprise mom and family with a treat and a cereal they never expected.
HI! This is great information about how to make a gluten free version – THANKS! We are so glad your family liked them!
Believe it or not, some marshmallows have gluten. Usually hiding in the sugar. Double check the bag for the gluten free symbol.
Can you use marshmallow creme in place of mini marshmallows? lf so same amount or little less?
Hi – we’ve never done that but I would think it would work. If you try it we’d love to know how it turned out! Thanks for visiting our site.
I just made these about 2 hrs ago but used the 7 oz jar of Marshmallow Fluff. They still haven’t set up. But they still taste great! Not letting them go to waste.
How many crispy treats are made for these measurements?
Hi! You can make them any size, so it really depends. We cut them into 15 Rice Krispie Treats.
This is a great recipe! Thank you!
