How to Make the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture
The base for our 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats is our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe which we have adjusted and perfected over the years until it is now absolutely the best Rice Krispie Treat recipe we have ever tasted. You can find all the directions you’ll need to make these delicious treats right here.
How to Color the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture
You need to make three batches of Rice Krispie Treat mixture in Red White and Blue. For detailed instructions on how to make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture, check out our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe. I added the food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture BEFORE adding the Rice Krispie Cereal. We used the Red, Pink and Blue food coloring from the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring system in the following amounts:
WHITE: Make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture for the White Layer 5 Cups of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (5 Tbsp. Butter/5 Cups Marshmallows/5 Cups Cereal) No Food Coloring
RED: Make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture for the Red Layer 5 Cups of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (5 Tbsp. Butter/5 Cups Marshmallows/5 Cups Cereal) 8 Drops of Red Food Coloring
BLUE: Make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture for the Blue Layer 3 Cups of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal) 8 drops of Blue Food Coloring/2 drops of Pink Food Coloring/1 drop of Red Food Coloring (Note: This is the combination I used to get this pretty dark blue color. I added the pink and red to counteract the yellow from the Rice Krispie cereal. If you just use only Blue food coloring, your blue layer will probably be more aqua than American Flag blue.)
Step 1: We made two batches of Rice Krispie Treats (see amounts and how to color above). We left one white and colored the second with red food coloring. We pressed the Rice Krispie Treat mixture into two cookie sheets (make sure they are the same size) in a thin layer. You can see here in the picture that the Rice Krispie Treats only went up about 1/2 of the way up the side of the cookie sheet. Let them set for approximately 15-30 minutes.
Step 2: We cut the sheet of Rice Krispie Treats into three equal pieces. Each of these will be a “stripe” in the flag. I made a guide with a piece of aluminum foil to help make even cuts. We did the same thing with the sheet of white Rice Krispie Treats.
Step 3: Layer four of the 1/3 sheets of the red and white Rice Krispie Treats. Start with red, then white, then red, and end with white. This is the base of our 4th of July Rick Krispie Treats flag.
Step 4: For the remaining 1/3 of the sheet of red Rice Krispie Treats in the cookie sheets – we cut it in half. And we did the same thing to the white Rice Krispie Treats.
Steps 5-6: We used three of these “half” pieces (red/white/red) to make the stripes that appear to the right of the blue area of the flag. What did we do with the 2nd white piece? Like George Washington, we cannot tell a lie, we ate it!
Step 7: Now we made up a smaller batch 3 cup batch of Rice Krispie Treats and colored it blue. We let it cool on one of the cookie sheets for about 5-6 minutes.
Step 8: Then we buttered our fingers and molded the blue Rice Krispie Treats mixture into the open area of our 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats. We tried to make sure the top was as flat as the bottom. We even turned it upside down and let it set a little while like that.
Steps 9-10: Once the loaf is completely cool, use a sharp knife to cut out your 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats Flags slices. Trim around the edges and you have a beautiful Rice Krispie Treat American Flag.

I make these every year. Thanks for a great idea!
Thank you so much for posting this. My family had so much fun making these together and they turned out amazing!
Sooo… It looks like I’m several years and months late to this post, but I plan to make these this weekend. I’m wondering about the length. The pictures make it seem like cutting parallel to the short end of the cookie sheet produces the flag shape, but it seems like it would still be too long (even though it’s the short end). Your finished product looks like a traditional Rice Krispie square. Did you cut them short on the stripe side? Or did you line up so that you can make two flags per short side? Thanks!
the family loved them… planing to make them again for the next 4th of july
I made these for the 4th and they were a hit! I was a little worried mine wouldn’t turn out looking like flags but it actually was pretty easy. The problem I had was that my layers didn’t really stick together very well, any suggestions?
Hi – how long did you let the Rice Krispie Treats set before you started assembling them? Maybe next time start assembling the flags before the layers are 100% cooled. Glad you like them though! Thanks for visiting our site.
Oh. My. Gosh! My teen daughter made these for the 4th yesterday, and they were SUCH a hit!! Thanks for sharing! We’ll be back to see what other ideas you have to offer!
Just finished making this for our fourth celebration. It turned out really well and tastes just as greathttp!
Hi Jazzmine! I’m so glad your 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats turned out great. Happy Independence Day!
Your first ingredient is Rice Krispies Cereal, not Rice Krispies Treats. Right?
Yes – Rice Krispie Cereal.
So cool, I love them! It’s my sons 13th birthday party and we have always done red, white, and blue theme. So this will add to a great party treat for all the kids!! So happy to have found this! Hoping I can make it look as nice as you have?
Hi Laurie! How exactly do you make the marshmallow mixture? Do you microwave it or place them in a pan to boil? And for how long? Thanks 🙂
Hi Chris – I melt the marshmallows in a pan and not the microwave although I have seen that people do that. Here is what I do. I melt the butter in a medium sized pan on medium heat. When the butter is melted, add the marshmallows. You don’t want the pan to get too hot or the marshmallow mixture to boil or you will have tough/chewy Rice Krispie Treats. Stir the marshmallows slowly as they melt. This process should only take a few minutes. As soon as the marshmallows are melted, turn off the heat and add the food coloring. When the marshmallow mixture is the color you want add the Rice Krispie cereal. Hope this helps! Happy 4th of July!
Thanks! Have a great 4th! One more questions: unsalted or salted butter?
We usually use Sweet Cream Salted Butter but I’ve used both salted and unsalted.
Maybe I did something wrong, but 2 bags of mini marshmallows isn’t enough. You need 3-10oz bags if you follow the recipe above. One 10-oz bag is about 4.5 cups. Also, make sure to cut the pans into 1/3s length-wise. Otherwise, the flag slices come out huge! These turned out great and my office-mates loved them. Next time I’ll know to cut them the right way.
Hi Kelly – I’m glad you liked how they turned out. Thanks for pointing out about the size of the bags of marshmallows. We make Rice Krispie Treats so often that we always get the larger 16 oz. bag. I’ve updated the post indicating that you need 2 16 oz bags or 3 10 oz bags. Thanks!!!
Hi! What size cookie sheets did you use?
Hi Lindsay – it doesn’t really matter what size you use. The layers will just be a little thinner or thicker depending on the size of the cookie sheet. But the cookie sheets I have are 11 1/2″ x 16″ measured on the bottom of the cookie sheet pan.
Do you recommend Americolor only? i already have wilton food coloring…would that be just as good?
Hi Kelly – any red food coloring will work. We like the Americolor because it is a gel paste so it’s a little more concentrated and you don’t have to use as much to get a dark red.
LOVE THIS! I was wondering, though, how many “flags” does this recipe make? Just the 8 shown in the last picture or more?
Thank you!
Hi! You can make about 16-20 out of a batch using the amounts of Rice Krispie mixture that we describe in this post. The total number will depend on how thick you cut them.
I am so going to do this for 4th of July. My husband’s cousin hosts 4th of July and I like to do something different each year. With that said it is a dessert my husband can eat since he can’t gluten. Win, win desert. Thanks for your creativeness.
Great idea! I’m curious – did you use the Americolor soft gel paste or the liquid gel food color?
Hi Nancy. We usually use the soft gel paste but the Super Red that we have is the liquid gel food color.
Do you think these could be made ahead of time and frozen?
Hi Janet – Yes! Definitely. Rice Krispie Treats freeze up great and we think they taste just as great after they are defrosted.
What size cookie sheet did you use?
Hi Tressa! I would say about one and a half bags. We had two bags but had some marshmallows left over.
I am making these babies right now!
That seems like a lot of bags of mini marshmallows. How many did you use total?
Hi Jessica! I would say 15-18 depending on how thick you cut the slices. Ours were a little on the wide side (about 3/4″) and we ended up with 16.
How many servings did this make? 🙂
Oh how absolutely lovely!!! Seems easy enough. If only I liked this popular treat. I see folks bring some holiday inspired treats and take them home. I don’t want to be stuck with rice krispie treats. Nevertheless, I love the idea. Thanks for sharing!
